so i went about installing a 136 amp ND alt in my 93 xj. removed the oem 90 amp one, switched pulleys, rear wire router etc....

things i learned:

- remove all brackets holding the alt. on the engine
- grinding needs to be done on steel and aluminum brackets to make it fit
- also need to make some room on the engine.

the 136 amp alt. is bigger so dont even think of squeezing out from the top. it has to go in from under the car.

i was putting everything together out of the car and everything seemed to fit ok. i would bolt it all up and then it seemed off. the two lumps where the alternator bracket mounts up that has holes threaded running front to back on the engine need to be shaved down a bit.

in all its more amps so it helps. brighter lights and with all accessories on it does not dim the headlights at all. this one was out of a 98 grand cherokee v8. bought for 30.00 + 15.00 ship on eBAY. the ground ear / bolt snapped during shipment so i had to modify the wiring a bit. not the prettiest but does ok i think.

the aluminum bracket needs some clearancing with a grinder, the steel one needs a bit as well. its great how aluminum can be ground down so easily. for the steel bracket i just used a cutting wheel on a dremel tool. just by lining everything up outside the car you can see where the room is needed. after that just shave some off the engine where the alt. sits, not too far or you'll ruin the threads for the bracket.

i would have had it done in about 2 hours had i realized the alternator was bumping the side of the engine. thats what happens when you start on something after dinner and you dont have all that much light.

not a bad upgrade for 45.00 and some of your time.

Funny this was posted today.

Dad got this quote off the rubicon forum site...

"You can get yourself a jobber alternator, say an '04 Durango one, it will bolt up as oem and it's rated 160A.

I checked out Mean Green alternators, they're 200A, and list the same replacement part # for my model year and several other TJ's and Durangos, so the jobber 160A from Napa should work."

Not sure if the TJ bracket is different on the 4.0L or not...But seems like a good idea for 160A

i was thinking of paying for a more expensive one but i dont have the money although it sure would be nice to have a mean green one or power master. i wonder if those are just drop in or if they would also require shaping of the brackets?

i know lots of folks have done so and some have just taken the mount off another cherokee.

are you thinking of a mean green?
