Hi. I must admit I'm admit that I'm a bit embarrassed for not knowing this but, I started having transmission trouble and took it to the local drivetrain guy. Contrary to what I thought it was, he seems to think that my transmission is a "Getrag"??? I've never heard of this or seen it in a Cherokee. Can someone help me identify my transmission? 2000xj classic, 5 speed, 4.0l, 8.25rear, 4wd

im an auto guy....but from what i have seen, the only 5 speed trannies available in late model XJs were ax-15s and NV3550s were rare.
i know the AX-15 has lots of ribbing, i can tell one when i see it. www.novak-adapt.com or advanceadapters should give clues.

That's what I thought it was... my Jeep is at his shop and he's telling me that there is a aprox. 1" spacer missing (or it is there, I can't remember which one) which is throwing him a curve ball because it doesn't match any of his books. Anyways, the link you sent looks just like my trans so I'll insist that it is the AX-15 if I don't hear anything otherwise. Thanks

Your 2000 should have an NV3500. That was the five-speed behind the 4.0 in 2000 and 2001 model years (Peugeot BA/10 was 87-mid 89, AX-15 was late 89-99). I suppose there is a possibility that yours is a really early 2000 model and still had an AX-15, but I don't think that's very likely. There are pictures on the Novak site; the easiest way to tell what transmission you have would probably be to crawl under your Jeep with some pictures and poke around.

Problem solved- I google searched for a pic of the NV 3500 and discovered that it is also known as the "Getrag 5" Thanks for the help.
