Help with 242 transfercase swap

I am trying to help a friend swap the 242 transfercase in his 1994 ZJ. He has bought a 242 from a 1990 XJ laredo and discovered the spline count is different from the old 242 he's removed from the ZJ.

What are we looking at to make the new 242 work?

Is this a major deal?

thats prolly because, he has a 23 spline(not sure whats in a zj),and that year case has a 21 spline, but after 90,in 1991 they used a 23 spline count for the ho motors....and i assumed also for the zj!

Swapping the output shafts. A real pain in the arss. You need a 23 spline transfer case. Not a 21 spline like your 90.

swapping input gears in the t/case would be my guess.

Bingo. Swap those and put in.

as stated just swap the input gears and you are all set.

I did that for mine. drivetrain from an 93 grand and kept the 88 x case.
