View Full Version : Effect of the Fires

It is so dark and smoky in the C.I. Harbor that the street lights have come on at 2pm in the afternoon. I have had to batten down all the ports and stuff rags in the dorad vents to keep the ash and smoke out of the boat. My beach air lungs are not used to this bad air quality. :flame:
It is burning literally, all around my area excluding the ocean side. None of the fires are close enough for too much concern other that the air quality, but that does not make it any easier on my state of mind.

i drove up the 5 this morning and it was nice and clear. drove back down between 2 and 3 and the smoke was so thick it was like a storm blew in. the wind today was horrible, i was blown clear into the next lane once and it was very hard to keep the ol XJ in one lane. there was so much smoke in the air around magic mountain you could barely see it from the freeway.

I guess growing up in Flag, I'm used to forest fires. I don't understand what all the hullabaloo is about, but I can see the smoke from the Marina.
Hope everyone gets out okay, and the don't lose anything irreplaceable.

These fires are pretty serious because they are really residential. Several homes in malibu have been lost, a church and a really old castle that had presidential memroblia has been burned; total loss. Im 15min from malibu and the sky here is horrible. Amber everywhere. Just 25min north in porter ranch is another fire which is getting worse by the seond. No homes lost there yet but its not looking good.

Too bad on the loss of house and hmoe and business, but it isnt the first time there have been fires like this, or is it?
I've had several fires within 100YD of my home in Flagstaff, and one came to right across the road, but do to proper range maintenance, the fire stayed on that side of the road, and no homes were lost.
They risked it by building there, sometimes the risk wins.

All the pyro's out there are getting off right now. Happens whenever the Santa Ana's pick up. Match in one hand, pecker in the other.
At least the Malibu one was caused by downed powerlines. Heard there's another fire down in SD, near Ramona.

Some 40,000 people are being evacuated from Ramona and neighboring communities becuase of the "Witch Creek Fire". The Cedar fire started outside of Ramona, almost exactly 4 years ago.
City officials have been saying that this fire has the potential to be worse than the Cedar fire (which burned 2,200 homes) becuase fire fighters have been unable to fight the fire all day becuase the winds are too strong. They say they may not be able to seriously fight it until Tuesday when the winds are expected to die down.
I think they are giving the media plenty to be frantic about.

I remember the 1994 fires; I worked for L.A. Co. Fire, station 69 in Topanga Cyn. back then. I was at Gladstone’s (PCH/ Sunset Blvd) on Thursday, showing my GF the pictures on the wall in that restaurant of the 1994 fires. Talk about getting out of Dodge just in time!

Here is alittle info I came across. I hope everyone is safe out there.
__________________________________________________ _____________
'Significant structure loss' in Lake Arrowhead, supervisor says
A San Bernardino County supervisor says there has been "significant structure loss" in Lake Arrowhead, but the number of homes burned was not yet known early Monday afternoon.
San Bernardino County Supervisor Dennis Hansberger, whose district includes the mountain community of Lake Arrowhead, was at an incident command center at Mary Putnam Henck Intermediate School along with Board President Paul Biane and County Administrative Officer Mark Uffer. The school is near the threatened Grass Valley area.
“We know there’s been significant structural loss, we just don’t have an opportunity for anybody to count them,” Hansberger said in a telephone interview.
Many homes have been saved by firefighters, he said. Earlier in the day, Hansberger visited the Deer Lodge Park community, north of Lake Arrowhead, where firefighters were able to save all but two homes, he said.
“It’s not a complete burn-over at this point,” he said.
Firefighters were attacking the fire on all sides but they’re contending with heavy winds and a dense mix of manzanita brush and conifer trees, Hansberger said.
“With this wind pushing it, this fire is very difficult to contain on all flanks,” he said.
Resources are strapped by the many fires burning in Southern California today, he said.

From what i can see the wind is blowing the wrong way to damage Cleghorn, so we're safe there. I'm watching the tube too, 25+ homes wasted in the mountains; man, that is uber-sad. I have a friend in Crestline and I called and emailed him letting him know him and his family can stay here if need be, even though it'll be a tight fit :woohoo:.
To top all this off I had a terrible day at work lol. It's rather hard for me to have bad days at work since i'm part time and really don't do a lot, but today was able to clear that hurdle and go directly into "oh my God can it get any worse??". Anyhoo, there's my gripe. I will take a bad day over losing my home though, so I guess i should just grab a beer and shut up :).

Ya know, I'm not done griping. I'm sitting here watching the stupid news, and these idiot media reporters are STOPPING folks who are fleeing from their homes for an interview.
I understand freedom of speech and free expression and all of that junk, I know the law. HOWEVER, it is borderline absolute and total disregard for safety and everything else to stop a family who is crying, carrying as much as they can on their backs and heading down the hill to (where??) escape a fire that may possibly, or HAS taken their home - simply for a story! I tell ya, if it were ME evacuating and leaving behind everything I'd worked so hard for, there would be a reporter with a fat lip, and I wouldn't care if they were male or female at that point.
I just saw one reporter who stopped a couple leaving their home, possibly for the last time, and she had the GALL to tell them that it has also been hard on the media hanging around the fires. OH MY GOD, there are no words for how insensitive and absolutely insane that sounds.
Sorry, now I'm done. !!!1

You got 15 minutes to get out... what do you grab?
The worst part is driving away and thinking of all the things you wished you had grabbed.

At least when you are being shot at, there is someone to receive the same love on the other end. Some environmental health hazards suck worse then being shot at, unless you get hit, and even then sometimes that is less painful then the crud in the air you have to breath.
Just got notified to stand by for possible deployment to So-Cal, so help is on the way.

As far as what to grab, make yourself an oh shit bag. I've got my CamelBak, with a first aid kit, 2 extra nalgenes of water, purifier(chemical and bio), and a weeks worth of dog food, and power bars. Wife has a Camelbak, 1 nalgene, toilet paper, clean wipes, deodorant and glasses for us. She grabs the fireproof safe with our important docs, and I grab the dog and her gear.

if you want to see the effect of the fires come over to Leeps or my house and look towards big bear, I estimate out of 180* of viewable mountains from his back yard 120* is a nice shade of red right now and in the hour we were gone for lunch with Applevallyslim the fire had moved substantially closer to the next closer line of hills. Even to the point where we were now in the flight path from refueling stations to the fire. Im not a overly religious man but I prayed today as it seems hell is on it's way

What is crazy out here is that Borrego Springs has become a suburb of Julian. When they evacuated the mountains they had no place to go but out here. The Red Cross and FEMA stepped up and provided all the supplies we needed but limited personnel.
I gotta' tell you how proud I am of my town. The people around here stepped up and took control and are doing one helluva' job feeding two thousand 'guests.'
I have a family staying with us (with thier five dogs) and am amazed at how kids deal with loosing a home (if you wrestle with them and throw a bowl of Halloween candy thier way!)
Anyway, its not over and Julian is now in the path of the fires.....

The whole effort makes me proud.
I was evacuated Monday morning around 5:30am. When I arrived at Mira Mesa High around 7am they were already serving breakfast of eggs, potatoes and sauasage. While standing in line for registration we were offered muffins and freshly baked cookies. About every 20 minutes someone came by with water bottles offering water. We had plenty. The Red Cross really stepped up there and there was plenty of supplies. Cots were limited though. Qualcom stadium had to stop taking donations at one point because they had too much. Lots of volunteers too.
We had at least 4 or 5 places we could have stayed at with friends who came forward, but we've been in a hotel since Monday night. We'll probably go back Thur morning. Our place is OK. But friends and relatives are not so lucky.

That is good to hear. Hopefully your house does not get looted while you are gone. I know some people will wonder why it was so bad for those who suffered through Hurricane Katrina, and the quality of help those poor people received, as compared to those in CA.
I was in LA doing my part to help them people, and I know what they went through, so it’s good to hear that things are better for those in CA. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that people actually evacuated in CA, but in many parts of LA, they did not. I saw a guy who tied himself to a pole, thinking he could survive the storm. He was DRT (Dead Right There). It was very bad there.
A word of caution: When you go back home after having been evacuated, watch for snakes and other dangerous animals; and looters that may still be in and or around your house, ...depending on where you live.

Rick
Having been in Borrego before, I gotta say the people there are pretty awesome/helpful. Not something we see often here in the burbs.

My red Jeep has been parked here in Redondo this whole time since I have been driving the Chief. Here is what it looks like, mind you it's parked under a tree so a lot of the ashy fallout is blocked...
