dana 30 gear trouble

we tried to install my 4.56 gears in my 30 last night and for some reason we could not get them to set right, we got the pinion depth right and the preload correct. but for some reason we can not get the ring set to the right backlash/play, it just seems to be loose the whole time, we put almost every inside shim inside the bearing and yet it still wont seem to work right. anybody had this trouble

Obvious question but do you have the correct carrier?

yeah i should i was told by everyone i talk to my jeep had 3.73 and the break is 3.73 up and 3.55 or 3.54 down. so i should inless everyone i talked to was wrong, we are going to count the teeth today
