Have any of you got a alternator really hot to the point it smoked a little, but yet it dosen't really show any damage at least on the outside. Is the thing about to go?

I'd assume so. Most solid-state electronics (the diodes and/or regulator in the back of the case) don't like it when you let the smoke out, and it's easier to replace the component than to recharge the smoke...
