My wife and I headed down to Phx today to pick up my new $500 XJ. It is in need of some love as is missing two windows (front driver’s door and passenger rear quarter panel), the front doors have no locks, and the ignition switch falls out when you remove the key. The tranny is good and the 242 T-case works, but there is some water in the engine oil, so I will have to tear into the top of the motor to see if it is a head gasket or the head itself. The bad news is the wife says it can not come of the trailer until I have the walls and new baseboards in the master bedroom done. So I will be spending the next few days off in heavy labor so I can get to work on swapping parts. She calls in Jeep probation. Stay tuned for a Northern AZ wrenching party.

A few pics of new 88 heep.

dude, dont mess with it, just yank it all out and swap yours into it.
That only takes a few hours as a whole job and you know yours is good.

seriously though, should only take a few days of wrenching to get R Done.

now GET TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!

That is an option, the engine in the 89 is not the best as it had been way down on power over the last year and loves to blow oil everywhere. It is sad when the top of the engine leaks and the bottom does not. What ever the case I'm keeping the better of the two when it is all said and done.

:lecture: LOL Im sorry Jon, but Iam laughing, and I appologize that Iam, but then again Im not married. So what does this tell me? The day that I do get married I NEED to tell my wife that I'm a package deal, its me and the Jeep....If she wants something done, or needs something she need to think of my first love then me then what she is requesting.....

for those who are married, has this happen to you?:bs:

For those who are not married do we want this? :dunno:

So whats the advice given from those that are married or used to be, what do us single guys do? do we just :listenmus and continue with our junk and say " Ok babe" or do we leave and meet up with some other jeep guys and grab a  . But then if we do that we probably will be single and have to look for the:conceited girl and say :peace: . This makes me :puke:

Once you are married spending $ becomes a group thing. While I'm on Jeep probation she has been on probation as well. I do say this. It is harder to get her to say yes then for me to say yes. I will get her back some day when she wants something, trust me.

Man, I must be 1 lucky S.O.B.!!!!!!!!!!!
My wife loves to wheel, fish, shoot firearms, camping swimming dancing riding quads, you name it. In fact, she has stayed home the last 2 runs becouse she said I dont let her drive on the trails enough.
The key is to be open and honest with them. They either like to go or dont, but mine would NEVER stop me from going.

As far as Jon's Jeep probation, I have been on it myself recently. I had to remodel the master bedroom and buy a new bedroom set and now the jeep stuff is back on.............................

she claims that i spent too much time working on the jeep. too bad she doesnt realize that i was using that time to get away from her and her family!

she never liked the jeep. i bought it with money i made while deployed and she wanted me to spend it on her instead of "thearapy" it seems. she always said stuff like it smells in the jeep, its too high for me to get in (shes 5'2" and the jeep was 4.5" on 32s) it hurts my back to ride in it.....nag nag nag biatch biatch nag nag........

but hey, at least its not marital property thank God or she would be trying to take it from me even though she hates it.

i need to finds me a woman who likes to jeep, hunt, fish, camp, relax and can clean up real nice after thats done. lol

While my wife can be difficult at times after a week or two I can get her to see my way. I just do not understand why I can not hold out for weeks like she can, oh wait now I remember. Most of the time I just tell her that I want this part and I signed up to work an extra shift to cover for it. That is how I get most the stuff that I want.

As for the Jeep. She hates it. It is a rare day that she comes along, but I’m going to start working on her coming to some of these events and hanging with John’s wife since she sounds like she likes to sit and hang out at camp. We will see how that works out.

So today after working on my to do before playing with jeep list I went out and started it up to find out a list of repairs. The motor for the rear passenger window is gone, the blower for the AC/Heater does not work, the two windows that are missing, and there is a little more front end damage that I did not catch when I bought it, but it is nothing big for I have the replacement parts. The engine sounds great, but oil was everywhere. When I took a closer look I discovered that the valve cover did not have one bolt in it. Oil was coming from all sides like it was going out of style. I checked to see what the oil looked like and it looked new. The kid told me it needed a new head gasket, but I wonder if he meant the valve cover gasket since the oil did not appear milky in any way. I guess I should just change the valve cover gasket and degrease the hell out of it and see what happens from there. Any other thoughts I checking the condition of the head/head gasket? Here are some daytime pics.

Yeah, see what happens when you fire it up and drive it. You may have lucked out. I love ignorant people sometimes.

Melissa's jeep is rolling and Roger's truck is 90% finished. There may be some vacancy in the near future to do the swap. If you can use the motor that's in the new XJ, it would be a quick job.

That xj is almost the same color as your old one. nice. . .

I ran into a company needing to fill in some work until a new sub division of custom homes opens in the area. The owner is charging me $8 a square foot for the foundation and slab. Then $8 a square foot for the building. It will be stick built with insulation and drywall. It will have two windows on each wall, one 18' garage door, one entry door and four solar tubes in the roof. I have been saving money for a long, long time and the got a loan for the last part of it. I was told I will be in it well before February!! I plan to add heat and air to it myself, but I wanted to see how it does on its own so I know how big of units I will need to buy. Probably a wood stove and window AC unit.

Today I started to tear into the top of the motor. When I pulled the valve cover I found small drops of radiator fluid. I'm close to pulling the manifold off so I can take off the head for replacement. I also discovered most of the vacuum lines are plugged, brittle, or already broken so they will need some work.

Head is off. Gasket looks good and so do the head and block using the naked eye. I think the radiator fluid got into the head when I reoved the hoses with the lack of bolts on the valve cover. The neighbor and I think the engine had been rebuilt at one time as it does not appear to have 170k on it. This makes me think the radiator is bad and it is leaking tranny fluid into the coolant. I have started the clean up process and hope to start putting the engine back together sometime next week.

Picked up my head from the machine shop today. It was warped and needed a bath. When I got home I started to clean my engine. My neighbor stopped by and ended up bringing his power washer over. This saved a ton of time and I know need to get me one of these. After we got done we noticed a JB weld type material on the timing cover. So we pulled it to find it was badly cracked and repaired instead of replaced. Since I have the cover off might as well replace the chain. I hope to get the parts together so I can put it back together Saturday.

I don't really want to sell it, but most likely will have to for several reasons. It's a tough decision, especially since everything's fixed (including the front ARB!!) and I got rid of the bushwackers too. It's gonna be hard to part with if I do sell it, I've had it a long time.

5/8
Now keep in mind that setup was a UTK setup with the draglink being OTK but the tierod was UTK. I used a 5/8 bit nice and easy with alot of lube and it did fine.

Now if you are WJ knuckles then OTK would be easy but in my opinion if you go OTK on the draglink side you have to much above the knuckle and it is to much strain also depending on your backspace and rim size you will run into clearance issues.

I had 4.5 backspace and 15" rims and I had it clearanced with about 1/4" space to the rim. If it makes no sense it will when you get into it and see what I'm talking about

It sure it is. I'm starting to get worried. I picked up the o-rings tonight and will work a little on it when I get home from work tomorrow. I hope I can get it started and then get the front bumper put on. Next week I will take the old jeep into the body shop so they can pull out the rear bumper/tire carrier.

Is it leaking from the fuel injectors? If so, I had the same problem. I finally had to buy all new fuel injectors (a couple at a time). They were plugged up from being so old and were leaking from the fuel rail side. I tried to put new orings in and tried cleaning the injectors but it didn't work. Those suckers are like 80 bones apiece.

Thats why I bought the Ford pencil style injectors. Ebay was like 45 bux shipped for 8 of them.

they are off of a V6 Mustang if I remember right.

New o-rings on both side of the injectors, as well as the rail itself has seemed to work. No more leaking fuel, well I noticed today while under it that the fuel filter is leaking gas. I will have to pick up a new one this week and get that fixed. Engine started and ran good (I'm sure it will run better when the old fuel gets used up and new fuel is added. Started to flush the coolant system. I think I will end up doing this several times as it is bad. Found two leaks. One from a loose transmission line (Fixed) and the other is oil out of the back of the oil pan. I can never seem to get it right the 1st time. I will have to take it apart and try again as it is bad. Anyone have any tricks I can try? Removed the front bumper and got the old jeep ready to take into the body shop to have the rear tire carrier bumper pulled strait. I tried to post a few pics, but the computer does not want to do it right now so I will try tomorrow.

When we could not get the jeep to go higher than we needed we just dug out the ground a little since it is so soft from all the rain. We started to pull the front apart, but FLAGXJ had to go to a meeting and I got called into work. Thanks FLAGXJ!

One of my wife's friends had a left over day at the arroyo robles timeshare and did not think she would use it. My wife could not ride up to the retreat with all the other ladys because of work, and did not want to drive by herself. So we dropped her off in Cornville and went on to Sedona. The boys and I played along Oak Creek until check out on Saturday.

We went up to Jerome and ended up at the Gold King / aka Junk King mine museum and wandered around a while. I rememberd watching the blacksmith a bunch of years ago and wanted to show the kids. I am amazed at all the trouble the guy goes through to restore those trucks and then put them back in places to get ruined again. Half the trucks and crap on the hill seem ready to fall down on unsupecting viewers.

I saw the dirt road to perkinsville and drove back a few miles. Have you ever been back in there?

If I'm thinking of the right road it is one of the ways to get to Smiley Rock trail. The wife and I tool the Clarkdale trail once and it went to the fabulous Perkinsville. You got to stay in one of the nicer resorts in town. Hope you had fun. Sorry I missed you. If the heep was done we could have hit some of the local trails.

Did you remove the oring from the master cylinder? I did and the brakes work better but you can lock up the rears first if you slammed on the brakes.
