I’m looking for names of engine rebuilders in the tucson/phoenix area that have a good rep and cost. Removal and installation not required. Just drop off the block and head type deal, 4.0 ho specific. http://www.dakotacom.net/~jeepster/tipshades.gif

H&H did most of the macine work - mill head, grind crank, check valves, bore cylinder
Kelly's decked the block and installed cam bearings.
The balancing might have been overkill but with new pistons and some crank grinding I didn't want to find out later.
I initially dropped the block and crank at Phoenix Engine Rebuilders (21632 N. 7th Ave) and waited and waited and waited and after about a month retrieved it, paid for the hot tanking and took it to H&H. I think their problem is they focus on large volume v8 rebuilds and are too busy to deal with an in-line 6 which is something of an odity.
I also talked with Chuck's Speed and RV Center. I'm sure they can do it but the seemed a bit more expensive - maybe they're used to building hot rod engines and other higher end efforts.
If I was to rebuild another I'd probably get it done at Kellys. He had the time to talk for abit about what I was doing and what I wanted. He mentioned someone wanted to build a stroker jeep 4.0 and he had never heard of that so had done some internet research and was going to do it for the guy.

Not sure a rebuild is worth it or not. I got a $1100 quote for a rebuilt Long block with a 50,000 mile warranty.

I got my 4.0L through a company called ATK. their website is http://www.atk-engines.com/. I think it was about 1200 bucks including delivery and core pickup. 3 year unlimited mile warranty with labor included. It has done great so far, no complaints at all. It has been in for two years and about 15000 miles.
I think they have a distribution center in Phx but am not sure.

Sounds like a good deal. What's the company offering this?

Maybe XJ20 will take you up on that, it's a great price considering the warranty. Hopefully I won't need one any time soon as I finished mine earlier this year going the DIY route.
Funny, I was checking around before starting for a rebuilt motor and thought the prices in the $1500 range seemed high. Not any more. 2k for a titan stroker on eBay sounds good too.
Thanks for the offer though.

Don't buy a reman from Checker.. you will be pulling it in a few months to have it replaced under warrenty.. Thier rebuilds are crap....
ATK is a good company that does some really good rebuilds.. I've sold a few of thier motors in the past..

I’ve been distracted on another jeep but I’m going to contact some of those places mentioned and get some quotes. I have two machine shops to call. I guess the reman engine is the best value and a fast swap. I would rather get my long block rebuilt since it’s the oem, only has a little over 200k on it and is just starting to have some internal problems. If the rebuild cost is affordable I’ll go that route now that I can take my time to pull the engine and take it somewhere.
My comanche finally passed emissions today and got plates so I am going to use it as a dd for a while and work out it’s problems. It failed four previous times, three by the po but I got it to pass on my second attempt since friday. It never passed since a ‘97 TJ 4.0 with 60k was swapped in to the renix system by an auto shop for the po. I ended up getting an extensive 3-day course on renix problems, lol. Now that I’ve got it running and the J20 as backup I can do what I want to the cherokee. It never stops. http://www.dakotacom.net/~jeepster/tipshades.gif

I wanted to make a comment about my experience with the ATK Engine Re builder Company. I recently purchased 4 yes 4 engines form ATK and inspected each carefully. One 5.2L v8 Magnum and three 4.0L in line 6 jeep motors. Short story, I sent every one of ATK's motors right back. I personally will never use this company ever again. The quality of the blocks, heads, gasket sets are very poor. Not to mention I hit the side of one of the blocks with some compressed air to clean off some deb re and all the paint on the block and head just came off down to the shiny bare metal in big chunks. ATK engines are built in Mexico and are very poor quality in my opinion. The block and Heads that were used appear to have been shipped in random piles in Big Semi Trucks to Mexico. The castings were in horrible condition. Most of the machined surfaces for the water pump and timing chain cover to seal up against were very deep pitted from rust corrosion. You think your water pump will seal? I personally did not want to take the risk, to find out latter! Would have been a crap shoot at best. One head had very deep scratches all the way across the intake sealing surface/intake ports from one end of the head to the other rendering it unusable. Yet they set it out to me to be used. The v8 engine heads were from two different generation castings, yielding two different casting rev's. They were very different in the runner area. One intake gasket would not lay flat on the 4.0L head after put on over the two locating dowels at each end of the head, gasket bowed in the middle by 3/8" + away from the head surface. One 4.0L timing chain was so loose it was completely out of OEM spec's by a long shot. Almost forgot about all the metal fillings on the crank lobes. Also the rod cap nuts are not all the same style = hence contributing to a possible vibration problem do to out of balance/miss matched reciprocating parts. Also some of the engines came with a new oil pump and some did not. some came in Extremely damaged shipping crates and one came sitting on its crank on a flat pallet with old rope strapped over it to hold it in the pallet. Did not work very well. I had to ask my self.......what is the quality of the in side parts and assembly? You decide for your self. As for me never again, It was a waste of my time and it took me over a month to get all my money back after all the motors had been received at there depot. hens a delay in my ability to start the rebuild on my original motor. All time spent in this supposedly fast way to a new motor in my Xj....Three months! Needless to say, "I'm building the original motor out of my Jeep my self".
