That is right across the street from our studio.... I walk under that scaffolding every day. Glad I was not there for that. I just IM'd one of the other producers who is still at the studio.... she said glass is everywhere on 6th.
I think I will walk by Bryant Park instead from now on. Damn.

With proper rigging, picks dont "slip and fall."
Someone is out of a job, and OSHA will be on them like stink of poo.
Poor superintendent, I feel for him.

Yup. With proper rigging, proper equipment, proper training, proper maintenance... accidents do not happen too often.

Lucky for them it wasn't an Andy Gump.

It reads like it struck the building then fell. If it hooked the building the best rigging won't hold up. Gust of wind maybe, always worried me with our picks over a busy street..:shiver:

Its like a deadly game of "The Claw Machine" 10 points if you hit the Beemer, 20 if you get the harley

Hmmm...reading that story...it was the crane's bucket, not a dumpster.
And it was 53 stories, and not 20. That's a huge difference.
I know, I'm being too nit picky.

The website has been updated since we posted J.
And 20 stories to 53 stories doesnt make a bit of difference if you are on the ground...you're still hosed.

How long would it take an object like that to reach terminal velocity?
Anyway, I was just talking about the numbers 20 and 53. Not close. :) But I hear you on the update thing.

Exactly.... it was breaking news when I posted.... so details will change as it evolves.

Isn't the rate of velocity calculated as 32 foot per second * 32 foot per second. (High school physics was a LONG time ago)

9.8 m/s/s...but that is acceleration, a change in velocity.

too dark to see any visible damage from here in the studio.... but there is still glass on the street.

If someone knows the depth of each floor, I can figure out how fast it was travelling. Using 10 feet per floor (I am not a constuction worker so I don't know actual distance), A 330 feet, the bucket/dumpster would be travelling about 144 feet per second or about 96 mph.
Kollege, it werks four you.

Its not a dumpster either. Its called a 'slump' bucket.(or at least that's the mudwest slang for it)
It would be loaded with wet concrete, and then lifted into wherever they were pouring at and opened. The wet concrete 'slumps' out the bottom, then the bucket is taken back to its loading point, to start the cycle over.

Maybe you could email WNBC and let them know.... though I am sure they would be happy to tell you to STFU and deal with it... as a breaking/developing news headline and content is sure to change as more is learned.
I have to say it was fun to see all of the union slackers standing around this morning and locked out of the site this morning.... pending a safety review or some such common sense stuff. :greensmok
(waits for the pro uion bois to come out and tell me how great teh unions are, and how everything we enjoy is union this or that... save it fan bois..)

I think they might be more that 10 feet per floor. Look at the picture below... the worker in relation to the brace (though I am sure the mudwest has a specific term for it.. :) ). That brace appears to be approx. mid-height of that floor... so maybe 12-13 foot floors? Our studios have raised floors, and we still have at least 10 foot ceilings, that building may be similar. (where it landed was barely dented.. I was surprised.... but did not want to dig my camera out and snap a pic of that)

God damn..... You get rid of one of your headaches, and you still need a vacation. I realize noone at MSNBC has a clue as to what slump bucket really is, or what it does. It doesn't make good news, also people outside the industry wouldn't be able to relate, which makes it a worse news story.
Average Joe can relate to being told 'dumpster' falls, as they see dumpsters all over. They can't relate to 'slump bucket' falls, or to the truth it actually happens much more than you would think.
Please don't get me started on Unions in the construction industry. The company I work for has Union and non-union offices. We used to ship products to the union offices from the non-union production facilities so that they could be shipped to NYC jobsites so the unions wouldn't get upset.

Relax man.... take some meds or something. :) Vacation? I work 6 days a week, I do not have time for a vacation.
WNBC, not MSNBC.... WNBC is in NYC, they covered the story. I am not sure who Noone is, never met him/her. Either way, if you click the link, the dumpster part was changed when they updated it. :twak:
No.... please go on about the unions. It is always entertaining stuff to read.

All I have to say is
Think! Safety begins with me.
I wonder who the general is on that job.

I was going to the fedex down below wall street near pearl and beaver st to ship a PC to monaco, was walking on the other side of the street from a building going up and saw a bunch get spritzed with concrete in one of those buckets, not massive amounts, kinda like getting shit on by 400 seagulls.... Hope they learned to not ignore the 'sidewalk closed' signs and the barriers.

Shmeh, nothing tops the stupidity and the entitlement of students on the University of Arizona campus. I've had three projects there, and always had to deal with some of the most water-headed mouth breathing retard eye candy that there is on the world.
I've almost been ran down while doing traffice control.
I've had kids come up and ask if they could climb the steel to smoke a J.
I've had faculty come up and ask "What are you building" while I am standing next to the project sign.
However, nothing beats mobbin through campus at top speed in a 12K 54' reach fork. The looks when you pull up to a stop sign are priceless!
All in all though, the people on the inside of the construction fence arent much smarter.

That would suck! But, yeah.... they usually close the sidewalks for a reason.....but then the retards just seem to walk in the street next to the closed sidewalk. Not good for traffic flow idiots!

Got terminal velocity, say about 120mph, it's always a fun ride... however kittinger did manage to reach over 600mph from 103,000 ft, in a later jump he broke the sound barrier at over 700mph using a drogue chute to stablize his ass... god, a 14 minute freefall, THATS a religeous experience. I just can't imagine stepping out of a balloon at over 100,000ft, add a skyflyer suit..... fantasizing again. However there is a jump zone in florida that will drop you from 18,000ft :D :D :D for you halo wannabes... :D :D :D :D :D
