XJ running hot

My XJ tends to run hot on the trail. Sometimes pushing it up the hill in 4L 1st gear runs it hot. Hotter than usual. Were talking 235*f. I have to pull over and let it cool down. It has a new: fan clutch, radiator, radiator cap, thermostat, fan shroud, and enough antifreeze. Anyways, I heard an idea and want opinions. Chrystler made a car called a LeBArron or something in the 90's, it has two hood scopes that will fit right onto my xj if i cut into the hood. Anyone done this or heard of it?
 
How about the temp sender for the gauge on the rear of the head? Did you change that?
Could be a bad head gasket or cracked head (worse case).

Corbinafly, I forgot to mention the temp sender is also new. I checked the reading from it to make sure it matched up with the gauge. Silverslk, are those the scoops off of the LeBarron or whatever its called? By the way, got a pic of crawling up that hill? Snigs, the fan cutch is only a few months old, it should be fine. I hear it turn on and can see it on when I pop the hood. And Grim, ha, ha, ha, I'm gonna print that shit out, not really:dunce:
 
the hood vents are from a chrystler labaron. you can score some in a junk hard if you lucky. I believe they are only on the turbos though.

I've got the hood vents and they have gotten me zilch in engine temp, and cost me about 100 bucks a year in TPSs.

They look cool though,

I think hoodvents are a great idea and considered them myself at one point. However, in my opinion they are for Jeeps running a "bit warm", 235+ is pretty hot. I'd first really try and track down what is going on to make your XJ go that hot, try to alleviate a bit of that heat and THEN go with the hoodvents.

I just don't want to see ya throw money in the wrong direction is all :). Good luck on fixing it, and spend an hour on the "search" feature too, some amazing ideas out there.
 
What year XJ is this?

If you dont want to cut into your hood for vents, just get a few washers and space the hood at the hinges like I did. It raises the rear of the hood to let the hot air out.

But as someone mentioned, its important to figure out WHY its getting hot in the first place.

I would do it in this order:
1. Burp the system and remove ALL air from the lines.
2. Check to make sure your electric fan is kicking in or working at all.
3. Check the timing to see if your timing chain is stretched and causing pre-detonation
4. Check your Catalytic Converter to see if its clogged.
5. Do a leak down test to check the heads for any cracks. Possibly getting too many hydrocarbons.
6. New water pump.

If none of the above, I would try another radiator. New ones CAN be defective.

do a damn pressure test and see if you dont have a leak, mine had a hair crack in the outlet housing but ran perfect under normal circumstances
 
I will take all of these into consideration, maybe try some tests tomarrow. My xj(94') only got to 235*f twice yesterday within six hours. Last trip, begining of august, it hit 235*f about eight times. This was because I was missing a fan shroud and had a bad radiator cap:arrowl: Hasta . With these additions, it obviously has improved. Still though, I'm trying to find out if there is an underlying problem. Thanks, 4x4fish
Oh yeah, Silverslk, have those hood vents helped? And whoever lifted the hood in the back with washers and nuts, has that helped too?
