A car repair firm has been taken to court accused of infringing musical copyright because its employees listen to radios at work.

That's in the UK. I don't think that would apply here in the US, the performance fees have been paid by the radio station.
My sister used to own a Hallmark Card Shop. She had problems with her employees putting their own discs in the shop's music system. She could legally play anything that she was selling. She could not legally play anything else without paying the performance royalties. Her employees simply did not understand that (or didn't care.)

:flamemad:WTF...what a large pile of BS. PRS must be like ASCAP in the US. It is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of...well, maybe not the most ridiculous but definitely up there in the top 5. Who ever started these organizations should be :twak:.
When I was working at a business that I started for a friend, I actually had a customer ask if we had the rights from ASCAP to play the radio over the store. It was turned very low so you could barely here it while people were in there. It was a hobby-type store. I told them He!! no and we weren't planning on it. They got all snobby and said "well I hope for your sake nobody reports you because you could get sued." I'm like....I don't give a rat's @ss. It's a matter of principle. What are they going to try and do next, starting sueing people who play their radio's too loud at their homes to where other people can hear? The way most neighborhoods are being built now, that is not hard to do. Next they will be sueing people for listening to the radio with their car windows down. :smsoap:

Sounds like more asininity to me - save the above. Considering what is usually "blaring" out through open car windows around here - that I usually don't want to listen to, find offensive, and tends to promote violence - most of these people blasting whatever they're calling that crap this week should be sued.
Not by the "artists" (read: "untalented jackoffs") tho - but by the people who they offend. It's not enough that kids go zooming around here on those gas-fuelled scooters, after dark, wearing dark clothing, and with no lights to signal their presence - last time I heard a noise like that was when my stupid step-brothers were throwing rocks at hornet's nests (then they'd come crying to me that they got stung. They've probably grown up to be Democrats - I've no desire to keep up with either of them.) Now, I've got to listen to that and the "gangsta" - or whatever it is now - whenever I go anywhere as well...

I bougth my 96 with subs, and I tell ya, Doc Watson and Merla Haggard would pump out just as much bass as that gansta/rap bs...
Also. for stores playing music, when I worked at tractor supply, we had a set up called MUZAK that only played a certain type of cd's to keep employee's from playing thier own.

I'm not talking about "gangsta" music...rap. I'm not talking about that. I didn't say music that was blasting out their windows...I just mean if you pull up next to somebody at a light or something and both people have the window down, you don't have to have the volume up loud at all to hear it...that's all I was saying. I am not defending people who listen to the "gangsta" rap...I hate it as much as it sounds like you do. Calm down sir...I think you just leaped onto your :soapbox:. Lol...

that's rediculous! the warehouse at work usually has 4 different radio stations blaring along the belts, plus Sirius blasting from a huge stereo at the returns dock.

We used to have radio's but on sundays we'd turn on the race and nobody would be helping customers, just chillin in the back listening.

The performance rights by Muzak are covered.

Couldn't agree more....and the sad part is, I grew up with this generation blasting that noise...and I just don't get it....whats wrong with me?

Same thing with music on hold with some of the phone systems I setup, had to buy tapes from a company that cut them for this exact purpose, they had to pay royalties. There was also a legal issue with piping radio stations thru it too, had to get the stations 'permission' to rebroadcast. This whole riaa and drm stuff is getting out of hand, patents and copyrights need to have a permanent 10 or so year time limit and then it's over, period, this multi-generational stuff is insane.

No problem, let the brass know that we love this station here in the "Noke"!
(Roanoke that is)
I would say it is the #1 station right now.
