What do I think? I think it looks like $hit. I could get an 03-04 Rubicon for 20k. I could also have purchased a 00-01 XJ limited and put $10k into it for that much money. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Rangers are cool though :D.

Agreed. You might get an FJ Cruiser for $20K, but it will be an off the line FJ. Putting that much into a jeep, you have a monster rig that could flex on the FJ's hood.

I think its a funny question to ask on an XJ forum....
However, if you are wanting a mall crawler I think it would wear the 20's and Lowpros alright...maybe some clear tailights and a fartcan exhaust....oh,oh..dont forget the LED windshield sprayers...
Buy an XJ...for wheeling...it does things...

The FJ Cruiser is as bulletproof a platform as Toyota has ever made. Factor in the very high build quality that Toyota has, a VERY good 24 valve engine, super-stout drivetrain and frame that has been proven in the Tacoma, and you have a very tough out of the box off-highway vehicle.
I'd run the crap out of this rig in the desert and on most of my local trails with a vey mild lift and some 32's, including the Rubicon.

With a $4-5K XJ and $3-4K in mods, you can school the $25K FJ all day long.....but it is a pretty capable rig out of the box.
I like the FJ, be a good moderate trail machine/kid hauler.

oh $naps- Crash gives his 2cents and nobody can talk $hit anymore. Alright for all the purist. Your loyalty astounds me. Put any vehicle up to the XJ and it falls short yes. But over all i agree with crash. Any way the toyotas website has some good video clips if any one is interested. Oh and STEELFISH, Its an off topic forum for a reason. And mogified- I dont own one and i live in the flats, hard times.

Putting 20k into a crappy looking old jeep and wheling the hell out of it is alot different than dropping 30k on an FJ and then crying everytime a bush tickles its pretty Clear coat.
I'm dieing for one of these but I'll porbably go for a 4runner instead if we end up getting something because the FJ is TINY inside. Its about the size of a wrangler inlimited.

We ran Kane creek in Moab this year for our chapter run. The tree's and bushes on that trail are over grown onto the trail in places. There was a very large cruiser group in front of us with several brand new FJ's. I think one still had the temp tag in the window. My XJ was scratched up pretty good afterwards. I could not even imagine spending that much and then trashing the paint like that so quickly :)
From what I saw, they preformed fairly well, the big problem they were having was the drivers...

Sua sponte....I understand this is off-topic, however I still think its funny.. I'll say this, the shop I work at has an H3 w/shop logo....they are tiny, I think that the FJ is similar. However the FJ falls into the same catagory....along with the Bronco concept on an Escape chasis, and the prowler, hhr. Neet to look at w/ a good idea, just still not as cool as the real thing....wasn't trying to blast you....oh and I am a bigger fan of the previous gen 4runner.

Quite frankly, I think if the FJ had a solid front axle, you guys would be moist over it.
It'd be the new XJ, except with far better build quality, engineering, performance and materials. Dr. Z, are you listening?

FJ Cruiser? Don't like the look of them or the IFS - otherwise nice vehicles.
If I was _j_eepless and had $20k to throw at something today it would be either a used FJ-80/LX450 or a used Galendewagen (non-luxo version).

Not the FJ, I really don't like the look of them. It just isn't growing on me the way new auto shapes eventually do.
Now and H3 with a LS1 and a solid front axle... I could get into that if I fit inside. Hell, a mid-90s 4 door Tahoe with solid axle would work for that matter.

For the most part it is a combination of things. Clint nailed part of it. Who wants to trail rash their brand new vehicle. Also the cost, Build one on-line. By the time you add locking rear and other stuff it is $28,000.00. I have less than $15,000.00 (including the XJ) in mine and it can be done for much cheaper. I started with a relatively expensive one because of year/mileage/options.
I very good XJ can be had for much less than an FJ that is less capable and that you are going to cringe every time a limb scraps it. (not mention the potential roll-over)

x2 it would be a nice platform had it been engineered with its roots in mind, it came out of r&d as an image vehicle and after crawling through one there is a huge list of changes both large and small that i see that would make it a viable off road platform..... im curious to see how 4 wheel and offroad's ultimate fj build ends up considering how bulky the body itsel;f is and how liitle room there is underneath the framerails to work with but i guess they will come up with something.....

I think I would have an h3, with the rear locker and the 4 to 1 low range. to me they look kind of like an xj, with the chrome grill and overall boxy shape

Can't wait for the results also. This will be an interesting build to see. I have most of the Ultimate Adventures videos. I really like the ultimate taco they did for 2004.

Depends on if they consider a gravel road Trail Rated, then again theres a major east-west roadway near me that has a nice set of woopty-doos as well as a number of other paved surfaces that make gravel seem smooth and quiet...................................
I still say that thing looks like a butch Pacer that's been put on a diet....

As far as the Comp-ass goes, the people who want/need an AWD wagon already drive Subarus (and the various other imports - audi, volvo, etc).
On the flip side, if a person really wants a "Jeep" or the image a Jeep projects and only has 15-16K to spend (the Comp-ass is being marketed as the entry-level Jeep), they're probably looking towards a used TJ/KJ/WJ, not a low-riding wagon.
I'd buy a new FJ if all I wanted to do was mild/moderate wheeling - looks like it'd be tough to see out of though. Toyota reliability and build quality would probably be good enough to compensate, I'm sure.
