Hopefully you're all familiar with the Route Designation BS. If not, go here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=596279

When you're good and pissed off, do the following:
1. Go to www.PreserveOurTrails.com
2. Click the "ELDORADO PETITION" link at the bottom
3. Fill out your info
4. Click the link in the confirmation email

A letter will be sent to the FS asking them to keep more trails open. It randomly chooses 15-20 trails since they have asked us to be specific.

Somebody worked very hard to make this very easy! Please take 2 minutes to make it worth their effort!

Its happening in every state. You can thank the Dems for this. There greenies have gotten all the trails in Eldo closed for the time being. Looks like they have been closed for about a year now. They are probaly grown over by now.

Basically, the FS has a bunch of old timber harvest haul roads and a bunch of trails out in the woods, and there's no way they've ever had the money to manage all of them. They could have closed them all when their administrative use ended, but the old school mindset was, WTH - let them ride if they want.

Eventually, someone called them on the lack of management. Runoff and visual appeal and noise are all management issues. At the core the complaint is lack of management. The court said, no you have to manage: that's your mandate as a federal agency - to manage. FS replied that they don't have the funding to manage all of it. Court said identify what you can manage.

That's the bottom line. Each forest will close what it cannot afford to manage. I am not knocking the petition or the letter campaign, but in the end each forest will have open only what it has allocation to manage. If you can talk the county into taking over management, that's great; or organize your local members to manage a trail. You can set up a Cost Share Agreement even at the district level. But, the long term solution is getting more money allocated to trails management. Recreation is one of the mandates of the FS, but getting Washington to cough up the dough to fund it is very, very difficult.

What I'm saying is, in addition to the petition and letter drive, start talking to your representatives, 'cause the forest can't do much without that allocation.
