Will 31 x 10.5 tires on 15 x 8 wheels with 3.75 backspacing fit on xj with 3 inch lift without rubbing flares/fender? Will trimming of fenders be required?

No trimming? Well you might get away with it on the street but if you flex it up get ready for a whole lota rubbin!

Yep you'll need to trim!

Maybe 31's would fit on a 15x7 with 5" BS, tucking nicely inside the fenders.

But, no way with the wheels you mentioned. They will definately hit the bottoms of the flares, as I am sure your tires stick out past your flares. If you want to do it anyway, just run some serious bumpstop extensions.

What about 4" or even 4.5" B/S? Will rubbing be minimized?

On a 15x7" wheel,4.5" BS is the least you can run before the tire moves under the flare!
