i am doing a gear swap in my xj and i am having trouble finding the right size pipe to set the bearings. i remember seeing something about using the old bearing to set the new one.i was just wondering if anyone has heard of this or can give me some ideas on what to use?

I take the old bearings, cut the cages and remove the rollers, then use a die grinder to open them up some so they will not stick on the shaft. then you can use your press plates in conjunction with the old inner race to press the bearing on the shaft.

I also use old bearings as set up bearings if they are in good enough shape, just clearance out the inner race so that the bearings will slide on and off of the shaft, a lot less pressing/no damage to the new bearings and a good bit faster.
