Dead coolant temp gauge

The temp gauge is dead on my 96 sport. No codes, fuses are good. Nothing seems to be disconnected. What should I check? Is it possible that the gauge itself is dead? I really don't want to put in an aftermarket gauge. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

On the back of the head is the sending unit. Check that the plug is ok mine was unplugged. Look from the drivers side and you will see it.

I'll check that out when I get back from work today. Thanks for the tip. I assumed the cts was the sender.

When I got my XJ , ine was broken . The dealer wanted 90.00 for a new one. I found a whole cluster (New in plastic) with 1.8 miles on the odometer .

I got it for 60.00 for the works . I now only have 3200 miles on my heep .:clap:
