sounds like if you ready to do a little work on it you should pick it up. I for one am all about running a manual transmission, the one in the older xj's is a bit problematic though. but hell for $500 you can run it till it breaks and then do a ax-15 swap and be ahead of the game

Sounds like a good deal if you can do some wrenching on it. I would recommend the 91+ with the HO motor and the AW4 auto but you have a good deal with the 88.

I might try to get it cheaper from him since he really dose not know whats wrong with it! :shhh:
And i have never heard of that motor can you give me a couple links to check out out?

Yeah i can wrench on it!
i was told that if you are lucky the 88' could have a danna 44 rear end!

That combo is very rare, since the tow package usually came with the AW4, since it has a higher tow capacity.

that is true, Ive found a few though that also had the 44 and 4 banger models now that was a rare combo

Try to find a AW4, doesnt have to be HO, since HO only has a 16 more horses and 10? more torq
I like my 88, renix hard starts, Dont know if tis all models but mine takes 5 seconds sometimes, somestimes 3.
I got it for 400, but AC isnt working, not freon either, needs a new compressor I Think, and then paint (easy to fix!)

I'm going to also suggest finding an automatic inline 6 cherokee. The 5 speed on the 87-90 cherokees is made by peugot, and the gears are made from forged dog shit. A manual trans xj is fine for around town, but when you get out and wheeling they are harder to wheel and require much deeper gears than an automatic. If you're going to want ot do a small lift and some slightly bigger tires, the auto will be much more forgiving.

i can always do a motor tranny swap
and yes the truck will mostly be drivin around town when i first get it i am about to get my license so i wont be wheeling for atleast a year! but it is a good platform!

Thanks i have been searching man readying for the last week on 88s!
GOT the email back from him
<tt><tt>i parked it as soon as it over heated and got it looked at and there is
nothing wrong with it it starts and everything it just cant drive more
than a block before it over heats but my macanic looked at it and he
just think the termistat needs to be changed cause its not letting the
water in to cool the motor . but the only reason i put it for 500 is
because i didnt have time to fix it but now i have time and im gonna fix
it so now im gonna raise the price to 1000 now so if your still
interested its gonna be perfect after today
heres a pic

It does look great on the driver side, lets hope he doesn't put in the right t-stat and he doesn't burp it...LOL... then you can still pick it up for the 500. I found out on here to get my t-stat from the dealer, no trouble with it at all

I'm not convinced a cracked thermostat would cause overheating but it wouldnt help it was stuck closed.

Thats a nice looking jeep.
Just one word of advice, make sure the seller smogs it he is responsible to make sure it passes. You as the buyer should not take on that liability.
Good luck!

hmmm 19......I was on my 6th car by then, and countless motorcycles. It took me a while to see the light though, first cherokee this year. Your 19, tell your mom to stop worrying, most people start driving at 16....or better yet tell her to cage it for you so that you are "safer".

Well, xtimmax got his first jeep a few months back, and his toyota a year ago. We have him on our ins policy since he was 16. The ins bill is 900 yr for both cars. He is 18 and a good driver. He is also finishing HS this year. He pays 1/2 the ins bill. 200 seems lean unless it is per month. If that is the case, shop around, you will be able to find a better rate.
Just my .02 cents.
Get that jeep and there are plenty of people here to point you in the right direction. We will help you wrench, but you gotta be willing to get dirty yourself first.
