OMG!! get rid of that amp now. Make some money fast and get a new amp. I'm just messin with ya, but you'll be happy once you get a nice amp. I got the exact sony sub just a year older hooked up to a sony 1200 watt amp and it hits at 120 db. And that has set off a couple car alarms. Sony is the way to go for a cheap but good quality sub.

Can't beat free. And it's certainly not the amp that sucks, I've seen one pushing a 15" Adire Brahma and hit 140. I'm currently trying to get both his amp and his sub off his hands.

Actually those JBL amps are very under rated, more power than a Sony 1200 watt! Sony is VERY over rated!
I am NOT a fan of Sony, ESPESIALLY their CD players and Amps! I install for a living and can tell you they aren't worth the cardboard box they come in.
120 DB is nothing! A friend from work has 2 RF 10" T1s in a ported box that hit 146db the other weekend, my old 10" HE subs hit 139. Bandpass boxes suck too, they have no frequency response and are very "boomy" not clean.
I have gotten away from all the bass, and have almost nothing in my XJ. I have 1 12" Alpine R series in my car as well as great mids and highs. I have as much power going to my main speakers as I do my sub. Hit 136 with just the 1 12".

I agree, RF has taken a dive over the last few years. I see blown rockfords fairly often. I wouldn't buy any of their stuff anymore. We RARELY have problems with Alpine though, and the type X kicks ass!

I have the similar amp JBL 180.2, I don't plan on wining any sound level competions so I just purchased an Infinity perfect 10". That JBL amp when bridged is 380wX1 rms at 4 ohms and I intend on putting it in the cubbyhole.
I also just purchased, along w/the sub, an Infinity amp 111wX4 rms to power my existing Boston acoustics pro series 5.5, in the rear sound bar, and Infinity Perfect 6.5" component set in the front doors. Where do you guys think I should mount the tweeters? I heard there bright as hell :sunshine:

Well, those tweeters are bright, but to keep imaging I'd still mount them high on the door. There may be a setting in the crossover to cut the tweeters some, we no longer sell infinity, so I am not as familiar with the newer stuff.

yes high on the doors is good... i mounted mine near the door handle on my 99 but i quickly realized the the would rip off easily so i flush mounted them into the doors...i took the door panel off cut and used some lexel a clear epoxy that is great and shouldnt ever come off on the backside of the tweeters and the crossovers inside the door panel too so everything is hidden... now when i take my doors off i dont know where ill mount anything bc i have tube doors on the way...maybe underdash i have no clue ot get the kickpanels by q logic but it is kind of a vulnerable spot... i have some alpine components type r on an 300x4 jensen... as for my system to older jl 12's in a small sealed box (.7 cu ft per sub) with a planet audio 800x2 at 4 ohms and 2 1.4 farad caps... sounds great with a panasonic dvd headunit... my ultimate goal is to build a custom center console inbewtween my two bucket seats in the back and run it all the way to the front...stash the subs and throw the amp and caps under the two bucket seats somehow...not much space to work with so i can open up the back for more space since my rear is chopped...anyways a lot of work but can be done... projects

A long time ago I was running a treo 18" pushed by a 1200watt JBL, in a crappy homemade box that leaked it hit 148, finally got a nice box for it but never took it to be measured. Now it just sits in storage collecting dust and I replaced it with just 4 6x9s. It might not have been the loudest but it would rattle you deep down inside all nice like :D

I'll have to look for pics, yes they were down firing, one inch slot port across the box in front (barely visible in pic) bass "right in your lap" . Most suprising to me was with the engine running and windows up I had stealth mode at pretty decent volume, you couldn't tell I had subs at all from outside the vehicle but it was a different world inside, fun stuff.

Thats one ten? While I don't know the recomended box volume for the SL-7's that thing is huge for any Solo Baric I have ever seen. From what I have always understood the SL-7' liked small boxes. That thing looks big enough to run two SL-7 15"s. My box is a third of that size (of corse I have the old round Solo Barics), and any demo boxes I heve seen one SL-7 12" in has been smaller than mine.

I didn't go all fo-shizzle like some of you guys. My head's cheap and small, and I only used a 300w 2-channel amp, so I'm getting about 120w bridged. The speakers are rated at 400w. you are correct, The enclosure looks huge, but the area of box is actully just a little over 1.3 cu feet. the box is hollow from the front just behind the seat, I have the yellow top/cd changer/sirius tuner/oba and recovery equipment in there, using it as a storage place kept things clean and out of sight. will get a few pics of it up soon.

No pics handy (can't see them right now anyhow - too many lawnmower parts in there...) but I've got an old Kenwood 450W amp driving a Rockford 10" driver in a wooden tube. I've got straps done to hold the tube down, and I've rigged a pair of bulkhead banana jacks so I can pull the thing when I need to.
Since I only need a sub for low-end fill-in (gives a fuller sound, I think,) so I don't need much - but does anyone know where I can get wooden tubes for 10" drivers? I've got another Rockford (picked up a pair, cheap!) that I'd like to get an amp for and put in my wife's truck...

I'm running 2 10" MA Audio's in a sealed box, powered by an MA Audio monoblock amp rated at 1600w max at 2ohms. More than I really need, but I only paid $300 for it and I got half of that from selling my old amp and subs. No pics since you can't really see any of it. Amp under rear seat, subs covered and in with my toolboxs, spare tire, spare parts, etc.
Anyone know a good location to mount the amps ?Under the rear seat, on the sub box, on the rear floor, on the back of the rear seat, on the headliner(best one I've seen yet!), etc. Is is that hard to find a spot?

Under the back seat is where I would go with it. I put one in my ex's ZJ there, and never had a heat issue with it( It was only about 250w RMS though). As you can see in mine it's where the factory spare was.

My new box is designed, cut, assembled, and test fitted. Just needs weather sealed, speakers wired, caulking and reassembly, hardware for cargo area access attached, some gray carpet, and solid tie downs. Birch Ply this time, used two sheets so I'd have plenty to spare and for another idea I have in mind. I found some at Home Depot (second store I went to) for suprisingly not much more than MDF.
Birch Ply vs MDF in my experience
pluses
Birch holds screws like wood (MDF is like old pudding)
Birch is more forgiving of drilling angle accidents:sad1: (MDF tears up easy)
Birch smells like wood (MDF smells like something)
Birch is stronger while quite lighter (MDF heavy)
Birch looks like wood (MDF looks like leftover sawdust, I'll cover it anyway)
minuses
Birch outer surface layer peels a little bit during drilling, cutting, handling
(i'll cover it anyway)
Birch is more expensive
Whats a good speaker wire to use?

Helpful tip for "appearance grade" plywood - apply a good masking tape (I like the 3M "blue" tape) over where you're going to drill to keep "surface pull-up" down. A couple layers certainly won't go amiss. Ditto cutting (use a sharp saw, preferably fairly fine teeth) and smaller bits can be wrapped in paper for handling when appearance is critical...
MDF looks like sawdust because it is sawdust - mixed with glue and rolled into sheets. That's also why it's so damn heavy - it's rather denser than plain wood, and the glue that holds it together is even denser (and there's more of it than in plywood...)
Principal advantage? I believe that MDF is easier to "steam and shape" into true curves, and it's cheaper because it starts life as "mill scrap."

Principal advantage? I believe that MDF is easier to "steam and shape" into true curves, and it's cheaper because it starts life as "mill scrap."For sub inclosures, the biggest advantages would be uniform consistency of material, resistance to vibration, and more of an air tight base.
The uniform consistency of MDF helps it to retain it's shape better than normal plywood. Normal plywood will expand/contract at different rates throughout the ply's, causing it to warp. Because of the uniformity of MDF, it tends to expand/contract at a much more even rate, allowing it to hold its shape and resist warping.
Normal plywood doesn't hold up nearly as well to the vibrations and pressure from even small "systems." When a speaker or sub is firing, its creating pressure, both inside and outside the enclosure. Plywood can delaminate due to vibrations (which can easily happen over time), affecting the longevity of the enclosure. Also, plywood will flex more, "absorbing" some of the pressure that the woofer would build inside the enclosure. Any pressure lost inside the enclosure through flexing or an un-tuned port (in ported enclosures) will diminish the overall output from the sub, as well as affect its sound quality.
Normal plywood is not airtight as most would suspect. While it does resist air passing through, it does allow some movement through. When MDF is created, the addition of pressure over the surface with excess glue creates a "skim" over the surface which is airtight. If the enclosure is properly sealed on all the internal seams, then the resulting encloser is much closer to a sealed container than a plywood box would be. How well sealed the box is also affects both the quantity and quality of sound, as I mentioned earlier about the flexibility of the enclosure materials.
These properties together in MDF help to achieve better performance and acoustics. Then again, the fact that it's cheap is a pretty good benefit too...
Sorry for the full essay, just wanted to put in my .02 ...well .03 at this point.:confused1

Whats a good speaker wire to use?
I'm not an expert, but lots of people in the audio forums go for knukonceptz.com I didn't run any tests or anything, but visually, their speaker cable appears to be of a higher quality than monster cable, and it's cheaper to boot. Their battery terminals are a bit spare, but functional and cheap, and I've read one or two accounts of people who felt underwhelmed by the distro blocks. Fast shipping and customer service though.
I tend to believe the group of thought that says a wire is a wire, and once you match stranding, and gauge, the rest is all fluff. Then again, I can't tell the difference between a 192kb mp3 and a CD, so any differences would be lost on me anyway.

good info... I'm no audiofile but know enough not to argue against the accustical benefits of MDF. Birch ply did look like the best type of ply in the store for whatever thats worth.
I found some nice looking 14 gauge speaker wire at Wal Mart of all places.
Here is a shot from late saturday nights first assembly and test fitting.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/xjblue/93%20Cherokee/P8070039.jpg
Found a big problem yesterday (my bad measurement) and spent another late night fixing it, wiring the speakers, and sealing the box, thought that was all taken care of but then had to pry off the lid and reseal/remount it correctly again (my friends lack of attention to detail). Thankfully the birch ply was more error friendly, we felt like everything that might go wrong, did go wrong.
Wired in the ol' amp, threw in the new deck, and WOW. Our new design kicks old design in the hind quarters several times over. With the subs bridged and working incredible, it was too much for the 15a fuse on the Amp, rewired them non bridged and still incredible.
Now I have a new "problem", to match the performance of the subs in this new box and really enjoy them I would need to concentrate on mids and highs. I am upgrading the stock speakers but I wasn't fully prepared for this kind of bass. Just wanted a new tool/speaker box the same size as the old one

It is an Infinity Perfect VQ with 380w rms going to it. It sounds awsome, expecially considering its a box made out of a fender, there really isn't any rattles at all. I just sealed right before the seatbelt.
I've been meaning to do this for 2 years and am definately happy w/the results party1:
We took a look at the front components today. The speaker for the front components are way bigger than what I had in. The magnet is like 4 times as big and there about 1.25" deeper. Now the problem is that, when in the speaker hole, the magnet hits the window when down. At first we were thinking that we would just put an .75" MDF ring behind the speaker but there isn't enough room between the inside door panel and the inner door skin (the stock location where the speaker mounts).
We'll figure something out though, but for now I'm exstatic and couldn't be happier with the results and can't wait to hear what the completed system is going to sound like. The mid drivers for this set are just too sweet, they look just like a mini sub :guitar: , the magnet is like 2/3 rds the size of the whole speaker.
Any suggestions?

I made it out of 3/4" mdf. I fashioned it after this write-up I saw http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97186
You can see the wires coming out of the back of the amp and going into the wheel well. All the taillight wires I just ran through the box.
grooovyone take a look at the Infinity Perfect subs they can be had for around $150 off of Ebay.

From Crutchfield, I purchased:
Sony Head unit: $250.00
Mono-Amp (400 watt): $99.00
Speaker Box (12"): $99.00
Wire package for the Amp: $35.00
From a friend, Kicker 12" Sub: $20.00
This setup is more than enough unless you want to compete in soundoff.

Need a little validation in my box math.
looking to do a low-pro box ximmilar to xjblue's, getting sick of the whole back taken up by my first homemade box
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/8/web/2048000-2048999/2048493_2_full.jpg
so, the infinity 1232w wants a 1.25 cube box (sealed)
thats 2160 cubic inches.
so just using inside dimentions, the box is going to be 21" wide per driver.
if the base is 11.75, height is 13.5, the front at a 60 degree angle, the area would be 13.5*4 added to 7.75*13.5/2
this gives a profile area of 106.31 in ^2
multiply by 21 to get 2232 cubic in.
all that math sound right? figure if i build this box i'll have room for the box and the amps underneath a rear cargo deck i can put stuff on.

Here's my set-up, sort of.. I took the 15" back out, it's an older one I had laying around my house, I'm trying to patch the hole in it.. Just dont have the right tools/material. But the 10" L7 stays in there.. It rocks most comparable subs you put up against it.
I roll around, and people are like "What you got in there? Two 12's?"

I believe that MDF is easier to "steam and shape" into true curves, and it's cheaper because it starts life as "mill scrap."

main advantage to using birch is its lighter and has a higher resonating frequencie than mdf. so with birch you get a truer reperduction of sound where mdf can actually amplifie certain hz's

Here's a new twist on the already used method. I took the cubby part off a spare panel and attached it to the box so the fit was as good as possible. I sealed the holes in the top of the cubby and everything else. Notice the notch slide as you need to take a 1/2" notch so it will fit as flush as possible to the side panel.http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m104/asatxj/sub%20box/back2.jpg

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/9/web/2133000-2133999/2133994_18_full.jpg I've "repaired" holes like that one just by layering in beads of acoustical sealant and smoothing them as they dry. You don't want a huge layer because the stuff absorbs vibration and will dampen the movement of the cone, but enough to seal all the holes up. Keep in mind this is not a true repair. The speaker will lose some of its functionality, particularly in producing higher frequencies, but at least it won't rattle or buzz anymore. In my case, after I repaired a large hole like the one above, I used it in a bass cabinet rather than for guitar. It wasn't good as new, but it did the job...

In my experience, the only advantage to using birch plywood over MDF or HDF is weight. When talking about resonating frequencies in speaker boxes, its better to think of it as a function of the thickness and density of the material rather than the type of material itself. The less likely a material is to resonate at all, the better.
Everything resonates, and everything has a particular resonating frequency that it 'prefers'. This frequency isn't just a singluar feature of the material though, it varies by thickness, size, density, temperature, etc. A box can be built to prevent some resonance, although it can't entirely be defeated.
Gluing joints, using screws for construction, sealing all seams on the inside with acoustical sealant, applying 'ribs' to interior surfaces, coating/covering the interior with sound dampening materials, and using a laminated baffle at least 1" thick, all contribute to make a much bigger difference in minimizing resonance than the choice of material. I've used hardwood plywoods like birch and oak as well as treated douglas fir, MDF and HDF. They all pretty much work the same when the above techniques are used.
MDF and HDF are superior in that they are very dense and rigid, but in turn are quite heavy, and when cut, release a nasty dust. Baltic birch can accomplish similar deadness in a lighter material, which is definitely an advantage when building very large boxes, but where I am, its expensive and hard to get. Fiberglas over foam core works too and makes a lighter box, but its pretty time consuming. I've never seen a metal speaker enclosure that I liked. They always buzz, rattle or resonate something awful. Not to say it couldn't be done, I just haven't seen it.
All that said, in my own XJ, I've got a cheesy underbuilt double 8" box that came with my sister-in-law's car and a huge ghetto MDF box with a single 12" that I bought at the Salvation Army store for 5.99. I really need to set up something better...

99XJSPORT06,
Mostly it was just using cardboard cutouts to get the bevel and shape right. When the back seat is up everything sits flush to it so there are no gaps and it looks tight. The main front face is just a piece of plywood flat to the wheel well. The front sub was positioned so that the rear hole didn't need to be there for it to fit. My RF subs were shallow enough that the depth of the wheel well fit their size just fine. Then I just cut the back hole and sealed everything up inside. I put a little polyfill in the box and stuck the speakers in. 100W amp bridged.

I custom made all the pods, amp rack, and removable box. Just fiberglass, MDF, and hobby wood.
Once I made the pods and installed them I wanted to change them. I will change them when I get some new speakers. The Alpine X's are nice, but the Infinity Kappa Perfects, I just installed into a buddies car, just perform better.
I'm also thinking about removing those subs and going with four new JL W3 6.5 inch subs that are light and small enough to mount to the roof. They only need .2 cubic feet of airspace a piece and we have the ability to mount a roll bar type mount to the roof supports. This way I can take the sound with me on trail rides and not lose tool/equpiment space. It won't have the same thump, but I am getting tired of that stuff anyways.

i know this info is out there, but whats the best direction to have the sub firing?
xjjeepcjs
November 27th, 2007, 14:46
It is a matter of opinion in an XJ. Since the cabin is open it doesn't really matter. Sound produced by a sub is omni-directional. Long story short... Lower frequencies travel through objects better than higher frequencies, but subs put in a trunk of a car, with no way to move air to the front, the sound will be deminished for the intended listener.
I like to see the subs, so I put them out in the open. But, I have see a really sweet TJ with the back seat frame acting as a mounting point for a sub box. Completely stealth, and trick. Seat still folds up to expose the sub, and the seat is re foamed to allow the old appolstery to go back on. It is on the web.
My goal is to get my speakers as high as possible the next build so that I can cross more creeks with confidence.

I agree. These Type X components were bought a year after they started that whole movement, and they do not sound even close to as good as some other high end brands. I got them really cheap, and thats what they sound like compared to a Kappa Perfect or a MB quartz. My original 6.5 Polk/Momo components were way better on reproducing lower freq's.
And nice job on the box, it is a real clean setup.

Thanks Im happy with it.

Still need to finish the cover, which will get a panel to cover the top, then get carpeted. It will also support a light load when the seat gets folded down.

Just a 10" Kicker in a ported box that happens to have the perfect wedge shape to fit against the Rubbermaid bin.
The Kicker pounds pretty good but it's not as clean as I'd like. A JL or Alpine will replace it soon.
And since I haven't posted a pic of my XJ yet, here it is:

no not at all and i dont even have it attached to anything. i had just finished and wanted to get it together so i was like yea ill attach it later but i never did. it is a very tight fit. it doesnt have any room to rattle and the plastic panel holds it in pretty tight. i used 3/4 mdf. i also put some blocks on the face of the box to give the sub room for excursion without hitting the carpet.

Okay, I thought it looked like a JL unit but was confused when I couldn't find it on their site. Thanks for the info.
I guess I'll have to suck it up and make one or go with the cheezy Select Incriments one. I thought it over and since the JLs are so expensive new, I don't know if I want to put that kind of coin into this project if they did make another batch.

Is your 12" a single or dual voice coil? One thing that you will notice is that a bandpass enclosure are not all that great for sound quality, they tend to be boomy and have little tone quality.

It is dual voice coil. I'm definately going to be replacing the bandpass with a regular box when I get a new amp.

depending on what version you have of the type r you have . hey have a dual 2ohm and a dual 4 ohm. if you have a dual 4 then you would want a mono block that will put down about 500 watts rms at 2ohm, if its the dual 2 ohm you can either spend th money on getting a mono block that will run 1ohm or just get a 2 chanel amp that is about a 2x 125 and run that 4hom mono and that will give you that 40 to 500 watt range. I personaly use Infinity and Hifonics . I have used a few Audiobahn amps with great results as well and they seem to be pretty well built for thier price.

Very nice audio setup, I am lloking for one enclosure por the sub without damage on the OEM parts on rear....
Because you have the knowledge on Alpine´s stereos... I had the opportunity to see the CDA-9885 and it has a USB wire on the rear... also it comes with an extra wire for the IPOD which is connected to the special output like a CD player box and in the other end a special connector to the IPOD, the question is this, the USB wire on the rear is to be used with USB memories on MP3?, this model reads and plays USB memories with music?
Thanks

Yup the amp is not hidden, but the windows are so dark back there it's not the easy to see in. I was going to mount under the drivers seat, but it was just a lil too big. I put the XM tuner there instead.
I then tried under the rear seat, but that didn't work either... so where it's at is where it's at. :)

Since I discovered this thread recently, I thought I'd post my amp setup. They are a set of older 12" Rockford Fosgate Punch series with a RF 250 Punch amp. While they sound good in my car, they are not very loud, but I have been told that is due to the low power wattage of the amp rather than the subs themselves.

No idea what the amp is. I got it for free a couple years ago, and the sub was actually worth $15 3 years ago at Best Buy:laugh3:
For how much money I have into it, Im not complaining to much. I figure at some point a hilift or something will go through it, so I dont want to have a $100 sub back there when that does happen. I am also not an audiophile, so I try to stick with basic stuff.

haha, i got bored this morning and actually did exactly that. my memphis is a large amp and it fit under the left rear seat. its a tight fit. i also got lucky because the only place under the seat where the amp can get fresh air directly where the amp fan is, so it worked perfect. i also put in my xj-pod, its run straight to my deck. many people dont the xj-pods, but when its not run through an amp it doesnt sound to bad.

I'm one of the very few guys that actually has a stealthbox, so let me tell you with great certainty to buy the damn thing !!! These boxes have-been discontinued for a long time, and there's a line-up of people looking for one of them. You will, most likely, get the same money back if you ever decide to sell it yourself.

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb146/urban-yan/Jeep/subs.jpg Cool thanks man! In your opinion, should I get the 10" JL sub with it too? I don't know anything about JL subs, so I don't know how loud it would be (but I guess that also would depend on the amp I have). He's offering the box for $150 and sold as a set with the sub and grille, $250.

It depends on the subwoofer, and its condition. If it's a higher-end/ pampered JL sub than buy the whole thing. If it's an entry level JL sub that looks like its been abused than just get the box.
But wow !!! $150 for that box is a heck-of-a-deal !!!

That's why I like my stealth install (JL stealthbox in the cubby hole/ amps hidden under the rear bench). I picked up 2 fairly large tool boxes recently, and they fit in the trunk without a problem. I wouldn't be able to do that if had a large sub enclosure, or if I had my amps mounted on the back of the rear bench.

I have 2 10 inch sony slim series, in the sony boxes. Each can handle 1200watts (330 RMS) and I power them with a 1000watt(300RMS) (thats about 1/3 of what they can handle)Kenwood amp. When I really crank it, I think my Jeep might rattle apart. Try playing Jambi by Tool. Its literally thunder. Sonys are good, just power them right. And I mounted my amp in my headliner with a metal plate small bolts and really strong magnets, you cant even see it from outside.

I'll try and get some to post. If you go into the NorthEast chapter section there is an Introduction page, I have the really clean red xj on probably the second to last page. The amp is not in, but the troll hair from the previous owner is. There is no way i am going to take it out anytime soon, it took a lot of time to get it i(it would be much easier without the troll hair). But what i did was take a small sheet of aluminum to distribute the weight. I used self tapping screws to mount really strong (from a computer hard drive) magnets that hold it to the roof. Put the plate on the top side of the headliner, and bolt the amp to it on the other side. I used a "big" hole i accidentlly made to run the wires to it. It's out of the way and looks really cool at night.

These eclipses have a large magnet on the back, i dont think they would fit. Also, i like the sealed sound, very tight bass. Putting the sub in the side would cause the sheet metal to vibrate also, causing distortion. Did you add any dynamat or sound deadener to prevent the metal from moving?

I used 1.5" mdf to make space for the magnet as the 15" Fi is deep too. I used to like sealed before I heard infinite baffle, which is much tighter and doesn't have the distortion caused by a box. All the sheet metal in my jeep vibrates :guitar:! The metal by the speaker is only dampend by the foam used to create a seal, but the vibration doesn't cause a problem because it isn't part of a box. I cut a large hole underneath to make it infinite baffle.
I bet your 2 15s hit harder than my 1, but that my response curve is flatter lower. A box acts as a high-pass filter and dampens the lower frequencies. What's the displacement on those eclipse drivers? That's an impressive looking setup and I bet it get's very loud. Ever play "bass I love you?" The low notes are single-digit Hz.

Ive never heard of the Fi before, ill have to look into it. Ive been out of the sound arena for awhile now. Im definitely interested in the infinite baffle, ill have to look into it more. I had the two 15"s originally in a camry. They were turned sideways and fired in the same direction. Sealed the middle space between them, and ported it through the arm rest in the rear seat. It used the whole trunk as a free air setup. I used to blow away guys with it...haha. At that time i only had a alpine 300 watt amp running them, and i hit over 130db. I was going more for clarity though.
I have a track called the 'Sweeper'...basically it starts out below what you can hear...and gradually goes all the way up til it goes out of the range of your ears. Plus the Iasca spl tracks are always fun.
Very nice setup, I like how you retain your trunk space. Not an issue for me...only time I carry stuff is 4wheeling or grocery shopping, which is why i built the rack.

Fi Car Audio makes awsome subs. And their IB drivers are a steal. My 15 was only $115 shipped, and I think that's great for a quality hand made in the USA product. They're so affordible because IB subs are usually limited by travel, not voicecoil power handling, so Fi builds the drivers with long travel and small(ish) power handling. I have a cheap pioneer amp thats rated 760 watts max and iirc 390 rms. I've blown the 2x30 amp fuses a couple times (60a x 12v = 720 watts) and the sub has had no problems at all. But overstressing amps is a good way to blow speakers, so I need to back off until I get a better amp.
My 15 displaces 3.56 liters per stroke, and if I want to go bigger I'll put the 18" in the same spot, it displaces 7.26 liters :guitar:!
That would be as loud as 2 of the 15s and would look awsome! And they're only about $200.

Wow, you guys need some audiophile information clean up in this thread...
srimes, you didn't build an infinite baffle, you just installed your speaker in a larger semi-sealed box. That's why you've noticed more low end.
An infinite baffle means that the speaker is exposed to the environment on both sides, and there is no "suspension" in the "cabinet" as there is inherently built into a sealed box. The huge risk here (which FI appears to have adequately dealt with) is superceding XMax of the driver.
For what its worth, for anyone else at home, don't build an infinite baffle setup with any old driver, you MUST match your box/enclosure to the T/S parameters of your driver or it will quickly toast when you put some watts through it. Just as a point of note, when it comes to bass applications, the superior tone comes from ported boxes, then sealed and then infinite baffle, in that order. Infinite baffle is excellent for high frequencies, like between 1kHz - 20kHz, for low frequencies, you will enormously increase your output by running a tuned port system, or a 4th order bypass box.
Also, "overstressing amps" will not "blow speakers", however feeding a set driver too much wattage when its not in a correctly oriented enclosure will.
Lastly, displacement per stroke is not related to SPL, and one 18" will undoubtedly not be as loud as 2 15"s...

ok
srimes, you didn't build an infinite baffle, you just installed your speaker in a larger semi-sealed box.
No. What I effectivly did is cut a hole in my jeep and plugged it with the speaker. That's what an infinate baffle is. The back is open to outside, and you can make the argument that the jeep itself is a "larger semi-sealed box," but that box is greater than 10 times the drivers Vas (at least I'm assuming it is), so Qts=Qtc, which is how infinate baffle is effectivly defined.
An infinite baffle means that the speaker is exposed to the environment on both sides,
No, that is an "open baffle" or "dipole" speaker.
and there is no "suspension" in the "cabinet" as there is inherently built into a sealed box. The huge risk here (which FI appears to have adequately dealt with) is superceding XMax of the driver.
true, the only suspension is in the driver itself. That's why it's cleaner, because there are no box colorations.

no. The cleanest most accurate deep bass reprodution is with infinite baffle. Sealed and ported can both be very good and depend on design. And bandpass boxes are the worst. They are the most effecient and therefor loudest for similar drivers and power, but they produce distorted and colored bass.
Also, "overstressing amps" will not "blow speakers", however feeding a set driver too much wattage when its not in a correctly oriented enclosure will.
Overstressed and clipping amps can produce distortion and power spikes that can damage speakers.
And yes too much wattage will blow a speaker, and there are 2 different modes of overpowering a speaker. What is usually listed (1000 watt sub) is the thermal limits, or how much power the voice coil can handle. The other limit is Xmax, or travel, which depends on both power and frequency.
Lastly, displacement per stroke is not related to SPL, and one 18" will undoubtedly not be as loud as 2 15"s...
No and No. It all starts with displacement. How do sound waves work? It's all about moving air.
And as for 1 18 vs 2 15, it all depends on the specific driver, but 1 18 can be louder then 2 15s.

if you got the same brand model 18 compared to the same brand/model pair of 15's that 18 will likely not be louder... personal expierence... i have 2 JL W3 12's running off a diamond audio 600 watt amp right... well everyone swore that the image dynamics IDMAX 12 would be louder because it had twice the x max... well they were wrong, maybe if i ported it but thats changing the game. the w3's were in a sealed box and my idmax is in a sealed box. where the max might be really close in comparison the 2 w3 12's sound better hit harder and had more bass everywhere across the freq's im very disappointed in the switch even if i did gain 1.5 cubes in cargo space.

and the part i forgot... you have to throw twice the power at the single sub to get the same output as the pair.
IMO JL audios W3 subs are the best ive heard/ had for the money and power requirements

And check out the "cult of the infinitely baffled" board. I'm not going to bother arguing my above points. Never mind the fact that I've built speaker enclosures and arrays for 25 years, many of which are still pounding in clubs and bars across the Canadian midwest. For the record though, the "cleanest and most accurate bass reproduction" is with a folded horn - period. For anyone interested in speaker design, function, limits, etc, the information is available on the web - but its most certainly not available on or via car audio and sub forums.
That infinitely baffled FAQ is the greatest repository of misinformation and partial understanding of acoustic engineering I've seen and can be summed up nicely right here.
Misc really important stuff.... ;^)
Why are we called the "Cult of the Infinitely Baffled''?
We are a cult because like all irrational institutions, we know our faith and beliefs represent the only true path to low frequency enlightenment (LFE). And because no amount of rational thought, scientific knowledge, law suits or political pressure, will change these beliefs.

I'm sure the systems you built for the clubs and bars are great, and for that environment IB doesn't make sense. An as for opinions on horn subs, that's highly debated by those with no interest in IB subs.
fwiw, that statement is tounge-in-cheek, lighten up. And it isn't a car audio sight, any discussion of car audio is banned.

Yeah, that's what I've found with any JL stealthbox I've come across...right now someone's selling one for a H3 and he's asking $300 so I've never seen them for under about $200...and having said that, I still have to install mine...

They're hard to come-by, but I did see another stealthbox a few weeks ago on eBay (that makes 4 or so in the 6 years I've been on eBay). It went for $300, but at least it came with a 250/1 amp, and JL sub. I consider that a good deal. I bet the stealthbox, alone, went for more when for more than $300 from JL.

Sony 500watt amp driving two 10" JL subs in a carpeted box, just got it wired up today. I still have alot of storage room back there, but i'm thinking of having disconnects put in so i can move it to put my kayak in, or more gear. Will disconnects decrease sound quality?

i wouldnt worry too much about sound quality with one of your center cones missing ;). the slight amount of noise you might get from having a disconnect inline will not be noticable with your current setup.

you shouldn't really need disconnects, just pull the wires out of the speaker box and take it out. if you are worried about the amp being on and are talking about disconnecting that, just pull the remote wire out of it and put a piece of tape on the end. that way the amp won't even turn on.

Old punch 12's(RFZ2412), they were free, which makes them better. I will be building a 4th order isobaric bandpass box as soon as I get an amp that will tolerate 2 ohms.

Dual rockford fosgate P2's (12 inch) with a kenwood 500w RMS class D amp.
With some fine tuning it bumps with a lot of fine tuning I got it perfect and it is low enough to hear my music but strong enough to feel it.
When I first dropped in the amp (the amp is new as of yesterday $99 brand new best buy) -4 bass on the deck and I was shaking my side view mirrors.

I'm pretty sure i'll never let another person wire up my system again. Its easy enough to do myself, and Best Buy has given me nightmare of a day today...
Had the system installed 2 days ago. Last night I noticed that all of my passenger side lights were out except turn signals and headlights. I took it to my mechanic today and he told me to go yell at best buy because he's pretty sure they mounted the amp over a wire and screwed into it, shorting it out. On my way to best buy right after that, I smell something funky and look down to see smoke coming out from under the dash. I pulled it over, let it cool, and pulled it into a parking lot nearby. Just starting it up made the smoke worse, and it didn't stop after shutting it off. I called the fire department and they came and popped the hood (didn't have pliers on me- my hood pull is broken) and theres smoke pouring out of the breaker box. a few melted fuses, but I think nothing else was harmed too bad.
I'll find out if it was truly BB's fault tomorrow, but right now it looks like it is.
moral of the story: know where your wires are before you drill on anyone's vehicle, and if you want the job done right, do it yourself.

I run a Kicker marine sub enclosure in my trail rig. It holds one 10" sub and is made to fire down. The box is a thick poly box that is water proof and the terminals are water resistant. It is heavy duty enough that I installed my trail gear box on top of it and it has held up very well. No pics at the moment, but will get some if requested. They are a good option if your throwing in muddy or wet gear and/or spare tires etc.

I have a big box i custom built for my Alpine Type-R 12's. Its slot ported and tuned for 35hz. Its in my grand am right now with a single kenwood 800w amp powering it ( i blew the second one when i was running 2). I would really like to run them in the XJ but im worried about ease of theft and the nearly total loss of cargo space (which is full of tools/spare parts/spare fluids right now. The box weighs a ton so removing it constantly is going to be a PITA.
Im thinking of building a custom sealed box for a single 12 that could be tucked away. WOuld it sound good? Im used to the pair of 12's and their vision blurring/bolt loosening bass. Would a single 12 in a sealed box be enough to at least feel in the back of the seat?

Most likely. I've got 2 now, I used to run a single 10 in a custom bandpass, and it was pretty adequate really. Sealed boxes can be small and they sound interesting. Do it.

In my XJ i have one JBL 12" it was a special at cartoys got 2 for 150 sold one for 150 and bought a 600 watt Power accoustik amp. i still need to do some tuning but it sounds good for what it is... i also only have 2 speakers in the rear speaker bar.
Once i get some speakers up front it will sound better with my Alpine deck.
