Did any cherokees come from that factory with a d44 becuase there is a jeep with a rear axel that was definatly not a 35 or an 8.25 at a local pnp. Also if they did come from the factory with a 44 what gearing would it have?

87's came with d44 rear 3.55's. all xj's have d30 front.
feel free to correct me if im wrong.

The 4 cylinder 85-87 had D44 raears with 4.10's. There were some XJ's in the 87-88 era with a towing package that had them also. but with 3.55's. All Xj's came with the HP D30 in front.

The 1987 model year had more D44 axles than any other.

Most XJs came with the HP D30 front; some came with the LP D30.

00 and 01s came with the LP D30 up front, as Tom R. said....

Possible, but rare to find an 89 with a D44....that was the last year it was used in the XJ...

Seriously? They built an XJ with a 44 front? Maybe an 8.25 rear? 3.55's or 4.10's?

South American XJ's had hp d44 front as an option. They are rare, but exist.

as far as stock gearings go it probably: 3.55 for an auto/ 3.07 for a stick

Also, I believe some foreign XJ's did get D44's front and rear, though probally extremly rare here in the states.

Edit: Sorry cal, must have skipped over your post. Whoops!

D44 rears came in 87-89 XJs with the towing package, so I'd bet the gears are 3.73.

Like someone said before, if they come out of a 4 cyl XJ, they have 4.10s....

No I meant 89 was the last year that they used a D44 in the REAR of US XJs....

So to sum up all the info..
in the USA
rear 44's only 85-89's 4 and 6 cylinders 4 cyl had 4:10's
fronts were 30's all were high pinion except 2000-2001 had Low pinions.
Not in the USA
Front 44's were available, most likely with 44 rears..
Anyone know if there are a bunch in Mexico?
maybe someone in Texas needs to import them :D
