I went junkyarding for some cherokee parts (i have a 93 I-6 xj)in Hayward on Saturday and it was fun. I got:
- IAT sensor, so i can put it at the airbox, should be interesting
- miscellaneous fuses / blocks
- right passenger door handle piece complete, mine was cracked
- almost new water pump (91 cherokee w/ cab fire) lookedl ike it was just put in.
- thule racks with locks (left unlocked), i had to key them myself though
- Thermostat housing temp sensor
- rubber boot thing from the rear driveshaft of a newer XJ. goes on the transfer case output shaft area, any good?
Anyone ever seen one of those rubber boot things? Would it be helpful? I dont have a SYE and I am not sure if its good to use that on a oem driveshaft since its in a place where it would rub the TC output shaft seal.
Anyhow, I love junkyarding, I wanted to get the leaf packs off a newer XJ and nobody wanted to help me. Funny thing was a guy who refused to help me came and wanted to borrow tools form me later and i had to remoind him that about 30 minutes prior i was also lookin for help and he refused. :twak::twak::twak:
I cant wait til my next junkyard adventure.

good stuff, how were you gonna get the leafs off? on a older xj im sure they would be all rusted to hell, I know it would be 10 min with a cutoff wheel and 10hrs messing with the bolts

Yea, when you REALLY go junkyarding you never leave till you have acquired AT LEAST your own body weight of parts...and said parts require the use of not only the interior but the roof rack itself to get home.. YOU just went junkyard *snacking* is all .
LOL :D : D :D :D :D

A quick trip to the U-Pull for me on Saturday netted me these, off a ZJ with D44. They'll be going on my MJ D44 very soon when I build it.
$23 total, out da door;)

i agree, i should have and would love to have come home with a lot more parts. i checked for lsd's but no luck. i was able to get all the bolts undone with the leafpacks but just no way to unweight the rear of the car since it was sitting on the axles and even though i searched i just could not find a jack anywhere. sad thing is they are everywhere when you dont need em.
i also thought of using a junkyard cherry picker and they were all being used.
i wanted to push the cherokee over in the end.
it was pretty easy unbolting everything. i brought pbblaster, the springs didnt have much rust on em at all. i'll go back this weekend for em.
because i dont have the patience to sit there and work on stubborn bolts i have a 120cu ft scuba tank on a home made cart with a 12 foot hose going to my air tools. thats 3000 psi regulated down to 119 psi of air yeah it looks stupid and i get funny comments but it helps since i am not a big guy and there are bolts i can hang on and not even get loose. pretty ghetto i know, but it helps a weakling like myself.

Most of the yards around here won't let you take in much more than a cordless drill and hand tools. Pretty tough to get some of the really cool but way rusty parts even with a nut breaker.

i have a friend that goes to the junkyard with a cordless dewalt reciprocating saw. he sure makes fast work of whatever he finds.
that thing does a lot of damage. if i were a junkyard i would not allow that since it always bites off more than needed. i would think he would be cuttin into my other parts i could sell for money.
i went to a junkyard near moss landing harbor and all the cars had severe rust issues, i went to the central valley by fresno and highway 99 and the cars were great and so rust free. hayward is the middle of the line, a little rust here and there.
i saw an xj with a battery warmer, studded tires and radiator heater. i knew that was not from around here :eeks1::eeks1:

I've learned to dismantle things rather then rip them apart cause if I destroy whatever is around it I'll need that part in the near future. Don't know how many times I've gone back to the local yards for a part that was attached to something I was going to demo off....

I have my own key to the boneyard and the dogs make good packmules when trained right. My mail comes there.
ON big jobs just take the doner(s) home. Return them when you sure your done. At 3.18$ a gallon for gas. Taking the donor home is a lot faster and cheeper the multi trips back and forth.
