Well, I put new tires on the jeep a while back and went from stock to 30's. Lo and behold, I lost acceleration and uphill power! So now I'm looking to go to 4.10s. Maybe with an Aussie in the D30 front.

Any advice on who to go to? I'm in Wayne County - think 150 miles west of Moab, 200 south of Salt Lake. Nearish to Richfield.

Thanks
-Tom

My self, if i was going to spend the $$$$ to re-gear i would go with 4.56
If you ever plan to to go with any bigger tires+lift....... 4.56 is the way to go.
But if you have not intention on doing a lift or taller tires.........4.10 would be ok.............

If it is a standard tranny and has 3.07(3.08?), finding an auto XJ with 3.55(most cam this way) might help and would be cheaper then buying gears and and the price for installing them.
This is the route that i have started with, but i already had the spare jeep with the 3.55 gears.;)

If you are re-gearing 4:10's are pretty much a waste! Spend your money on 4:56's and live happily ever after.

4.56 might be too low for 30's. I had 4.56 with my 31's and thought it would have been better for 32's or even 33's. But at the same time, I agree that it's a waste to spend good money on regearing to 4.10 since you will be going to a larger tire size later on. We all do.

If I were you, I'd look for some used axles already geared to 4.10 and sell them once you make the upgrade to 32s or 33s. JMHO

By the way, I should have given you a call last week. I went down to Boulder Mt. with Mike who lives in Loa. We stayed on the North side of the smaller of Row Lakes.

Great advice here, spend the money once and regear once.......not 3 times like some of us. 4:56's for 30-32's with an auto trans.

4:88s are perfect with 33's on the highway. I'm very happy with them, unlike the 4:56's on my last rig, which left me wanting for more power. The throttle response is like stock off idle and I can easily pull hills in 4th that used to require a LOT of throttle in 3rd with 4:56's.

I've been commuting in my Jeep for a month and my ave mileage is 19 mpg.....with a fair amount of stop and go, rush hour stuff and city driving. Not too bad with 6" of lift, 33's and a driver who likes to cruise at 75..........

More info than you asked for, but do with it what you will.

I will agree with Jeff here except for one thing. You said you are running 30 inch tires. Do you ever plan on going higher then that? If no, then 4:56s are way way too low. You will go the other direction. Instead of losing fuel mileage because you are working the motor hard you will loose even more because your motor will be screaming everywhere you go.

4:10s would be a waste if you plan on ever running 33s but if you stick with 30 inch tires they would be just right.

I would sit down and have a good hard think about what your future plans are for your jeep. Everyone is spot on though with the fact that you don't want to do it twice. Try looking ahead for future plans and work toward that.

Know any of the Price family in Loa?

I am running a stock dana turdy5 with 4.10's and 35" tires, I have been for sometime and ran 33" tires before that, Total suck! Although I do recall running 33" through sardine canyon and some of the 4.0 XJ had "Almost" a hard time keeping up? I have never upgraded the rearend for the simple fact that I will not throw money into that axle. I just assume save the money and buy a new axle. The only reason I have never broke is I have a 2.5 litre and there is not enough power to even break a spider gear (yet) :D

I just recently went w/ 4.10's and Won't (don't need to:shhh: ) go bigger than 31's with that Jeep and it drives pretty much like it was when stock.

Yeah, anyone else and I would raise the BS flag, but Jared has both the skill and sensibility to avoid the inchitis that the rest of us catch. :D

Actually Jared will be spending much more then the cost of regearing to go bigger. It is costing him the time and $$ to completely build an MJ.:D
He will not need to go bigger in the XJ.

BTW and on topic I had Rocklogic do mine along with ARB's, after I picked it up drove it over a thousand miles the following few days along with good use of the lockers, that was a month ago and no worries so far.

True Dave yet I never planned on building a bigger Jeep even after that one fateful day when I picked up an MJ. Then later the MJ no longer did daily driver duties and a lift kit popped up for it so I did catch inchitis, just directing it on to a "fresh" project. Last months experience on the Rubicon slightly changed and solidified my MJ plans.

I ran 3.55's and 35's for a while... sheesh that sucks. 4.10 are nice... but if you ever want to go bigger... ask santa for 4.56's.

Jared doesn't need to make his Jeep any bigger, he is pro. Oh did you have to use that spare steering setup on the Rubicon?

Isreal... your sig line is awesome! I love Dave Chappel (sp?)

Hey Stratton!
It did get used, though I came close to needing it, I didn't have to use it. I need to get a replacement spare setup for you. Got your message the other day btw. I'll have to fill you in on all the details when I get a chance.

Sorry, Nope. I'm not exactly local, grew up in Maryland. Only know a few natives in Wayne County.
