91 XJ 4.0 man
Ok so I go to start the jeep today nothing at all not even a crank look for lose wires dont see any try again nothing. decide to just tow it home slam the hood in fustration try it again it starts right up. get it home samething tried slaming the hood again nothing. When you turn the key you can here a relay clicking. all fuses are good all grounds are connected hood slamming not working anymore. I've had this problem before hood slamming worked then, havent had any issues in a very long time.
What should I look for?

Look for the red wire with grey dots, or is it the grey wire with red dots. Try that left pedal pushing it to the floor.
Mine had the same problem where it would not start and letting it set for a bit then it started. The problem was the plugs on the ECU I think were loose. I unplugged them and cleaned them and we were off and running.
Dont know what that actually did but have not had a problem since.
Hope this helps.

Its possibly a bad/sticky starter. Hit the starter with a hammer while someone turns it over (make sure they know not to run you over!).

yeah i used to have to have someone hit the starter solenoid and itd start right away.... replaced it and it was all good. What about a lose CPS?

You wouldn't be *jumping* the starter. Just hit it with a hammer a couple of times, not super hard but solid, while someone else turns the key. If it fires right up when you do (but failed right before), replace the starter. Sometimes the bushings in the starter get "sticky" and it wont want to start spinning. Hit it and they will break loose - once they are spinning they will keep going until the motor starts.
Slamming the hood could be shaking the car just hard enough to break it loose.

I think with a loose CPS it would still crank.
Have you investigated the loose nut behind the wheel :gee:

first time spanked it, it made a knock sound

Fair to say that the starter is bad.
