Tie rod movement - searched

I can grab my tie rod and rotate it back and forth with the tierod ends rolling in their sockets. Is this normal amount of play or does this indicate worn tierod ends? Should the tie rod be tight and unable to roll with the the bare hand?

To clarify, I am rotating the rod like one would rotate a motorcycle throttle.

It shouldn't be that loose i wouldnt think... knock it out of the knuckle and move it around. It will be obvious if its worn out. When i was replacing mine i took it out of the knuckle and i could move it around with my pinky if i wanted to... A new one should be a nice snug fit but with a lil force you would be able to move it around. My guess would be that it's time to replace yours...
