scenario:
my buddies fiance wants to see the ring I bought to propose to my girlfriend, I take it out of the envelope it was in (it had just been appraised) and bring it downstairs to show her (its now in a smaller envelope which was in the bigger one before)

After a few hmmm's and hawww's I get the nod, its very nice and she should love it. I put it back in the small envelope and lay it on the end table, thinking I will pick it up after the movie and put it back where I keep it... can you guess where this is going????

2 Days later I remember I had left it downstairs... so I go down and look for it where it was left... not there.

I have 2 room mates, and one is doing some drywall in his downstairs room so he's set his room up where we watch TV, right beside where the ring envelope was. I told the one guy not to throw the envelope out, and he knows better, but the other guy that is sleeping right there didn't know what the envelope was for, or what was in it. He just got back the day before I went to look for it. When I did go to look for it, his things were on the table... but no envelope. So the 3 of us tear apart the downstairs to look for it... nothing... then I look in my room here... then everywhere else I think it could poosibly be. and now 3 days later I am either ready to kill the person who has taken it, or cry because I have lost it.

I went through the garbage it may have been in to no avail, and have asked every person who has been to the house during this ordeal... nothing.

I could honestly careless that its a $5000 ring, but I had plans to propose in about a month... and this throws a bit of a wrench into those plans. I can buy another ring, but not in this time.

My main concern is whether I am living with... or friends with a theif... or am I to blame and have I lost it? It is insured but how do you claim a 'lost' ring?

Either way I had to vent about this as I have been moping around the house for 3 days now... and I am at my wits end for what to do.

I would start by calling the insurance company carrying the policy for the ring. I'm surprised you've waited three days to call. Hopefully you just misplaced it. If not...that's a tough way to find out who your real friends are.

I just find it hard to believe (so will the insurance company) that you just left something lying around in a common area that you spent $5,000 on. I spent $800 on golf clubs (not near as important as a ring) and i bought individual iron covers so they wouldn't bang into each other. Hopefully you get this sorted out.

That sucks, I was in the navy, submarines, you could leave your full wallet on your bunk and nobody would touch it. Might steal your hat to go topside but thats about it. We did have one thief, stole a shipmates money that he had taken out of the credit union to go home on emergency leave, his mom died. We took up a collection and sent the guy home on emergency leave.. We knew who it was and he mysteriously lost 4 fingers on the forward torpeodo room hatch when it accidently slipped it's release. Poetic justice, what goes around comes around, sometimes fast, sometimes slow..

Man I like that...we're one the same thinking level...I would have made it his head or perhaps penis that got slammed with the hatch though. Just a thought or possibly a suggestion for next time...take how ever you will. :D

Well I didn't spend that money on it, I bought it for much less while I was overseas coming back from Afghanistan... but the appraisal puts it at a much higher value... a bunch of us bought rings that are worth 2-4 times what we paid for them.
I can't see the insurance company paying up on a 'lost' item thats why I am trying to tear this place apart and make sure its not just 'hiding' so when I do report it 'stolen' it really is and I don't call them back a day later and say never mind its been found not stolen.

I have known all of the people that have been here since then and I can't see any of them as theives, I work with my house mates, and don't see either of them as the likely theif... I really hope I just misplaced it. You know when your looking for something you never find it, but when your not looking it pops into your head where it is, or what you did with it thats been eluding your thoughts... well normally thats happens... but I have no idea or recollection of me touching it after it was put down.

Anyway, a new week begins, maybe it will start off better than the last one ended...
