Alright, now it's time to find out how old/poor/goofy we all are.

What was your first vehicle, and how did you get it ?

1966 Dodge Dart, 2 dr, 6cyl, body and paint gone....parents gave it to me in 85, finally had it roadworthy in 87... Baby moons and chrome reverse wheels in back

Geez, white trash now that I think about it.....

1958 Ford Falcon, 2dr, built it in 68 when I got my license in NJ. Built it from three others. Body was baby blue, doors were light green and hood and trunk were black. 6cyl 2sp auto. Got me around for a year or so till I got lazy and didn't add antifreeze in time, one nite the coolant froze and blew all the freeze plugs out on the way to school:D
Dragged it home and let it defrost in the garage for 3 days, put new freeze plugs in, anti-freeze and drove it for another 5 months, motor was unkillable, gotta love these straight 6's we have :D
Replaced it with a 66 Mustang GT rag top, 289 4 speed, detroit locker and red stripe tires :D

A white 1976 AMC Pacer. It had blue interior no radio and the rocker panels were rusted out (imagine that on an AMC vehicle). My Dad got it from this eccentric older couple that he and my Mom were friends with for $200.00. It had about 60,000 miles on it when I got it in 1984. The car had polyglass radial tires and shortly after I got it the cable that operated the rear brakes snapped and I was suddenly able to the best brake tourques in town for a 6 cylinder bag of crap. I mangaed to blow the motor within about six months (I have no idea how that could have happened Dad??LOL) But it was fun while I had it. I put on the rear hatch in black electrical tape "the egg mobile" that was good for getting laughs.

I had 2 first cars. A 1947 Willys and a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria, spent 9 months in the garage for a new paint job and new interior. Dad was ticked off when I had dua glasspaks put on it. The Willys was just for winter and rolling over to see how much it would take.

1970 Chrysler Newport. Grandpa bought it for $50, replaced spark plugs to get it running and gave it to me. He figured I would be safe in it. He was right! Two weeks later I knocked over a wood light pole. Although it had a big "V" in the front, I was able to drive it for another couple of months.

I junked the Newport and bought a 340 1971 Dodge Demon with an 8 track tape player. White exterior with orange and black interior (it was ugly). I consider this "my" first car since I bought it on my own. Built up the 340 using a really stupid cam and all the supporting stuff to go along with it. Had lots of fun.... and trouble too. Very fast car for a reckless 18 year old. Fond memories of those "cruising" days. That was 1979, somedays it would be great to go back!

In 1995 I got 1986 2.8L V6 XJ.... I guess that says it all LOL While I had the XJ, I got a 1997 Ford Range (biggest POS I have ever had: I had trouble making it over tiny hills while going to SD to dive)..... and then I got the 98 XJ and I got rid of the 86XJ and 97Ford soon after :)

I was 13 when I bought it with my lawn mowing money. Turd brown was the color it was born with. One of my best friends and I spent the winter in my Dad's un-insulated machine shed with an Ol' Ben Franklin wood burner "restoring" my pride and joy. We hacked out the rust and arc welded, or pop riveted, in scrap pieces of galvanized sheet metal that were lying around the shed. Slapped in a few quarts of Bondo and bombed it with rattle can flat black. I learned at an early age that I would never be an automotive body man! When we got bored, or just tired of sanding Bondo, we would bust out the hidden pack of Salem Lights, load up the Daisy, and shoot sparrows. The mods were: Homemade 4" double tube front bumper (no end caps), Full 3" cage, white steelies with bald 31" Cooper's. Good Times!

1989 S-10 Blazer. It was stocker than hell despite my big lift aspirations. It was running like a top when a drunk college kid ran a stop sign in front of me while I was going about 40. The sheet metal was a little rumpled, but the insurance company junked it. Somebody got a good deal on a nice 4.3L. It still lives on though, a lot of the accessories made it over to the good ol' XJ.

1950 Hudson "Pacemaker" 2-door brougham (sedan).

Dealer offered my folks all of $100 when they wanted to buy Mom a new station wagon, and I was going to be getting a license in a year and a half, so they decided to keep the old tank for me to drive.

The first car I drove was a 79 F150 Super Cab long bed Larriet 2wd. Had a 351W that was very fast I think. Always wanted to convert it to 4WD but dad sold it against my wishes. Balck and Silver, with Black seats. Had a tool box built into the side of the bed. Still dont understand why they don't do that anymore. Use to baja that baby all over the orange groves of Indian River County Florida. Burried it several times in the mud and sand down there. The first car I bought and picked out was a 97TJ 2.5L auto. Still miss that thing. Got it in April of 96 when they first came out. Drove all the way up to South Carolina from Florida to find an auto.

Brandy new 1970 Ford Torino GT 351 4bb Cleveland. White with a super cool blue "lazer stripe"! (Weren't the 70's a kick?) :)

After 4 years of borrowing Dad's '61 Mint Green Falcon station wagon, I figured a degree was worth something a bit quicker!

Many a night (boy, I was even stupider then) spent jousting with my buddy and his SS396 Chevelle - couldn't quite touch him in the quarter, but that Cleveland could cruise all day at 100+ w/o flinching.

How's about a 1974 Chevrolet Caprice with a 400 small block 2 door silver with a black top? It was given to me by my grandparents(who had bought it brand new in 74) when I was 14. Had it for 4 years and now own my very own xj. I loved that car, but, it was just that, so I had to sell it for the old 4x4.

Guess I was lucky for my first vehicle to be a Jeep. 1986 Comanche long bed 2.5L 4x4. It was the most fun truck at school. I drove it from my 16th birthday in november until Christmas Eve when i didnt check the oil and drove it about 15 miles bone dry. Put like 5 quarts in it, fired it up and took it down the road with the strangest knocking sound from under the hood. I got about half a mile down the road and KABOOM threw a rod. The rod cap blew a hole in the block and to this day I can still see it bouncing down the road in the rear view mirror. For Christmas the next day my dad gave me one of those plaques for a deer or other games head that gets mounted on with the rod cap hot glued to the center of it. He even had a brass strip under it that had "Mikes MJ 1986-1992" stamped on it. Needless to say, I check the oil religously now;)

1959 English Ford Consul. One of the back doors wouldn't latch properly, which made it exciting for the passengers when I drove around corners.

RNMedic: My brother had a late-50's Gazelle convertable - strange car, it had a four speed shift on the column that was backward from every other car we had seen. We had a lot of fun with it though.

We used to shop the 8-dollar sales in San Jose. Dealers would sell cars for $8, $18, $28, etc. Usually the $8 cars were pretty bad, but above that, they were good for 6 months or a year maybe.

Bought it when I was 15 for $300. It had a blown engine but the body was straight. It came with a rebuilt engine, so by the time I got my license a year later I had it all swapted out. Between the Volvo and the Triumphs (cars) that followed, I was almost thirty before I had ever touched a down draft Carberator. I've still got that "UniSyn" in a tool box somewhere.

'88 Pontiac Grand Prix SE, bought from the guy down the street for $700. Slightly more pick-up than you'd expect from the 2.8 V6, and being the SE it had all the gadgets in it... drove it about a week, then the right front tire blew out one morning on the way to work and I plowed down (http://www.brtb.org/car) a 4' concrete mailbox and slightly bent the concrete light pole behind it. Chalk it up to inexperience, I guess....

.... which led me to buy Car #2: the '88 XJ (http://www.brtb.org/car2) :D - still 99% stock and probably staying that way for a while, not many rocks to drive over in Orlando anyway.

First car was a 73 T-Bird 429 4 bbl for $700 1983 dollars. What a POS... Had the hood fly up at 60 MPH (they have a BIG hood) then had a brake rotor disintegrate...IIRC I sold it for $50, but I think my folks would have paid me $100 to "just get it out of the driveway"

First Jeep was a pair of stock 46 and 48 Flattys for $1000 '95 dollars. Both POS too, come to think of it...but the 48 was solid and ran. I could still probably get them back if I wanted a divorce.

First 'real' bikes were a 76 KTM/Penton 400 when I was 15 and a 81 KZ1000J when I was 19. Lots of fun...

My very first vehicle was a 1938 Dodge panel truck that had an absolutely perfecy body. It had sat in a garage since early in WWII. I bought it for $50.00. I got this good of a price because the garage that it sat in was a auto radiator shop were all of us young guys hung around but instead of just hanging around I would help the owner. He was getting old so I would take the radiators off of the cars and put them back on for him. I didn't get any kind of pat for this just a couple of bucks here and there. Butr when he decided that He was going to close the shop and retire he wouldn't even listen to offers he was given on the truck he would only sell it to me.

The paint and body was perfect and it ran so smooth that my grandaddy sometimes told me to "cut it back on" at stoplights because he couldn't tell it was running. That was before I got the cherry bombs.

A 1988 Olds Delta 88 Royale. I got it when I was 17 after spending my Spring Break working at my grandparents house for a week:( My grandpa gave it to me and my brother as our payment for spending our vacation working our butts off. It needed work and so did I so I wasn't allowed to drive it until I got a job. 5 days later I found one and had it for 5 years. The car only lasted 4 until the tranny lost the ability to shift. The XJ is my second 4 wheel vehicle I bought my first motorcycle just before I bought the XJ.

My first purchased car was a forthhand 64 Comet, a leftover $100 steal from one of my brothers who moved up to a Tempest T-37. I rebuilt it before I was 15, and learned to R&R the transmission in less than an hour, by myself, before I was 17 (my father scrambled the trans six times while he was driving, never once with me driving).

A 200 cid six, with three on the tree and $20 whitewalls driving through a peg-leg pretzel rear axle. I once substituted a filed nail for a u-joint needle bearing to repair a dropped driveline (and when I last saw the car, about four years ago, it was still probably intact).

My closest neighbor had a 62 Falcon with the 177 six and we would race home nearly every day. A powerslide with the six, on the dirt roads close to home, was the best we could do (but it was fun). I had a flat track burned in on five acres of my fathers yard. Top speed in 2nd was 65 mph, where it would float the valves and run all day long climbing every grade without missing a beat, with an 80 mph peak in 3rd wheezing to get 1000 rpm past the torque peak. The car would overheat after you turned the engine off, and puke the coolant out to promote overheating when you got underway again (coolant overflow bottles were a high-tech addition). The underdash Pioneer FM radio & rear seat deck 6x9's would drown out all the drama (until the power wiring burned).

I traded the Comet for a 350 Honda, to begin a long line of trades (Comet, Honda, Javelin, Pinto, Yamaha, Triumph). The Comet was not a keeper.

Got my '84 Omni back in 1992, shortly after getting my license - was, and still is, my first ride. Still street-legal, and while a little rough around the edges, can still hold its own on the highway.

Whatever else you might say, the little devils can be tough to kill. The last time I DD'd the Omni, I was getting 30mpg, on the 2.2L with 3-spd auto trans. Looks like I might be getting that again now (2 carbs later) - can't wait to find out. I get a sort of perverse satisfaction from knowing that my 20-year-old hatchback seems to be managing mpg ratings that are nearly competitive with current-model Neons.

Rob

P.S. There seems to be some debate going on as to which came first - the Rabbit, or the Horizon(or its Simca ancestor) - head over to ALLPAR and look up the Omni - there'll be a link to the "history of the Omni/Horizon" that will mention this.

1967 Mustang - Red

It Started in the family with my older brother and 60,000 original miles. My dad bought it off a woman who widowed a car salesman who had it on blocks.

My older brother (non-mechanical redneck that he is) dragged it alot jacked it up in the back and general abused it.

I got it and found that he had never!!!! changed or checked the oil in the 3 years that he owned it and the 287 was hammered so I dropped a 302 in it with headers and a cobra dress up kit. Leveled it out and replaced the leather seats, dash, and sterring wheel. All original style of course from a mustang resto shop. Had that baby purring.

My little brother (non-mechanical at the time but quickly getting there because he recently purchased a 62 lincoln Continental) totaled it out when he and some buddies took it out drinking at 15.

I was at school at the time and did not come home that often. It was a year after the wreck that I was finally told that the car was gone. It still brings a hush over the family when discussed and I am present.

Hey i had a 66 Dart also.

66 Dodge Dart 2dr, 225 cuin slant six, auto. Parents gave it to me in 1975 when I was stationed in Virginia, drove it there from San Francisco and it became the liberty vehicle of the barracks, had many travels without me. Gave it to my brother in 1977 when I got my CJ7, it had over 200K miles on it. He got hit and the car was totaled in less than six weeks. Oh well. Miss the old Dodge, it along with my four daughters would really make me feel like Al.

Just sold the CJ last year so I could buy my current XJ.

Here is my first vehicle:

http://pics.montypics.com/macgyvr100/2003-08-26/1061949275_Dscf0010.jpg

1980 Chevy Luv Mikado 4x4. My dad bought it in 1988 and commuted 100 miles round trip to work in it for a little while before we moved. The truck was given to me in 1994 when I got my driver license. It has a 1.8litre 4 banger motor. I put a three inch body lift on it just to fit 215/75/15 BFGs on it, stock it came with 195/75/14 tires. I beat on that truck and drove it daily until 1997, (My dad also bought a 1981 Luv 4x4 when I was in high school which we beat on as well), then it became my second vehicle when I bought a minivan off my parents, that minivan was a waaaaay cool factor in college. I traded the minivan in on a 95 Taurus in 1998 and drove that until 1999 when I bought my 1995 XJ. All this time the Luv was driven on and off as a second vehicle and was taken to attica and wheeled in may of 1999 and october of 1999 (where the frame was bent and cracked). When I rolled my Jeep I started driving my parents 1979 Ford Bronco which they eventually gave me and I daily drove (including towing my Jeep 1500 miles in July of 2002 to camp jeep), in Nov of 2002 I bought a 99 Dodge Dakota which I traded off for a 2000 f150 in June of 2003. So currently I own the 2000 f150, the 79 Ford Bronco, the 95 XJ, the 1980 Chevy Luv, along with a car trailer and a 5x8 utility trailer.

I learned to drive a stick on a family friends 1984 Ford Bronco II in the spring of 1994, cause I love fords and wanted to say that I learn to drive a stick on a Ford instead of a Chevy.

My dads first truck, which he also still has is a 1995 Willys Truck with the hurricane flat head 226 inline six, its in their garage for the time being.

Glad to see I am not the only Luv driver. Mine was a 1982 Chevy Luv Mikado. It was the first year that Chevy started using the Isuzu Pup body. Had a diesel engine and was a 4x4. It turned the sky black when I started it, I had to put a quart of oil in it every day, and fill the front tires up every other day. The back bed was lined with orange shag carpet.

We just sold it yesterday after we put a new diesel in it, and some new tires. POS, but it got me from A to B, and then back to A every day.

both were POS, but got from A to B most of the time....

My first car was a totally rotted out 1976 Honda Civic CVCC. It was so rotted the shift linkage rotted out and broke on me. I got it for $75 in 1984 when I was 15 from a place called the West Allis Auto Club. It's a place where gear heads work on their cars (I'm still a member there). The car was donated to them.

To this day I cannot figure out how Honda stayed in buisness much less earned a reputation for great cars selling crap like that. It was rotted out AND it ran like crap and it was only 8 years old and had less that 100,000 miles.

The worst part was everyone thought I was an ass for driving a Japanese car back then. Now everyone thinks I'm an ass because I won't. I can win!

I paided my parents house (4000 sq ft  ) and they paid me $600 and I got it a new paint job. Then for my birthday I got new wheels and tires for it. It looked MUCH better, but it was still a POS and way too small. I replaced it with a Blazer with 88K on it that I got for $1500 in perfect condition except a blown engine. Shame on all you guys that owned Falcons and Comets for not catching this. Falcons came out in 1960.

'62 flatbed chev truck...got it in 1976, traded a 5 speed bicycle for it. Didn't have any brakes, which I and a friend discovered by pushing it off the hill and aiming it at the fence, rather than the creek. That 283 was nice engine, though, once we replaced the freezer plugs. When the cops got on me for not having any cover on the back tires, I nailed a couple of 2x4's to the back, and some wood paneling over the tires, every couple of weeks, they'd lean down, get burnt up by the tires, and I'd nail on a couple more pieces. Wish I had half the 'lets try it' guts I had back then...

'59 Peugeot 403 station wagon, which I got in summer of '65. My mom needed a new car, and I needed a car for a summer job. Dealer offered 100 bucks to trade, 200 not to. Great car, had bad bearings, broken rings, holes in floor, structural sag, broken springs, brake linings totally gone, ran like a watch. finally the worm-drive differential, which had been threatening to fail for some time, did so, snapping the rear driveshaft when it jammed, stranding me outside timothy Leary's castle in Millbrook, N.Y. Peace and love my a$$ - those folks were inhospitable.

Well, actually, I had two cars before that, but I never drove them. When I was about 8, my parents and I split the cost of a '41 chevy with a bad clutch (I only had 6 dollars, so they kicked in the other 6), which we parked out in the woods and I happily hacked to bits, etc. for a couple of years. Later, I also got a Model B Ford 5-window coupe in need of considerable restoration for $125. It sat in a garage for a few years, until I needed money and sold it for a grand. I wasn't equipped at the time to do it right, and I had no title, and no serial number, so I let it go. Sorry now, of course.

1990 Jeep Wrangler. 258 straight 6, 5 speed. That was three years ago. At the time I thought a Jeep Wrangler meant you were the s*** off-road, whether it had mods or not. I replaced or rebuilt everything on that Jeep within the first year except the t-case and it held at a maximum of 5 psi of oil pressure at any one time. Now I have a 1997 XJ that Ive rebuilt and replaced nothing in and it would go places stock that would've made the Wrangler cry, though when it comes time to remove the top and doors i do miss that Wrangler.

'72 Dodge Charger ... bought it with 13,000 mile on it in 1973. Many, many good memories of that car. IIRC I paid $3300 for it and the payments were about $120.00 a month. I was working for $2.00/hr then.

Wow, it's hard to say...

By the time I got my DL the drivers in the family included Dad, Mom, two older sisters, and an older brother. I was driver number six, all in Dad's hardware - almost all Mopar and Dad liked to keep one extra around just in case. Dad would buy old CDPD's with worn out trannies or siezed motors for $100-$200, put in a rebuild kit and run them for another 200,000 miles.

When I started driving there was a '51 IH pickup with a straight 6 L-head painted bright Halloween orange (the paint can said "Red" but when it went on orange the old man was too cheep to repaint it), a red-n-white '61 Dodge Pioneer w/ a 318, a '62 Plymouth Golden Commando w/ a HP383 4-barrel and LSD, a '64 Dodge 440 w/ a slant-6, a '64 Dodge 880 Station Wagon w/ a 383, and a '65 Plymouth Fury II w/ a 318. And that was only 1976. Over the years, including spare parts cars, I've counted over 20 including a VW Bug during the '80's fuel crisis. Also, a 1960 Triumph TR-3, but after years of cursing and kicking it Dad finally gave it away before I got a chance to drive it.

The very first thing I drove was the truck. That's where I learned the clutch. When I went out on my own Dad signed over a '68 Plymouth Fury III w/ a 383. When I finally ditched it with a leaking front trannie seal (no tools, far from home) it had over 350,000 miles on it. I hopped a Grey Hound back home and picked up a '72 Plymouth Grand Fury w/ a 360. After that I bought a Ram Charger and in 2002, my Jeep.

From now on, it's Jeep for me!

Did that have the push button auto? those where cool!
What we used to do with the push buttons, in a '62 Dodge 4-door w/ "Golden Commando" 383, Carter 4-barrel and LSD:

You push the "1" (not the "D", not yet) then STOMP on the gas. When you're thinkin' it can't wrap out any higher you push the "2" (you'll want to be holding on to something, hopefully the steering wheel). When that's about wrapped out - then you can hit the "D". Sometime after that the suspension starts to float which gets really scary cause that thing weighs like 5,000 lbs.

Dad traded it even to my Sister's boyfriend who was going away to grad school and needed a ride. The boyfriend had a '63 Dodge 330 slant-6. That's right! My Dad traded a Golden Commado 383 4-barrel for a slant-6. And then the boyfriend dumped my sister. A total SNAFU deal :firedevil

Sorry for the late answer, been away (TAD) on work. No was a column shift Dart. I believe '64 was when Chrysler stopped the push button shifts.
Tom
'65 was the cable link from a column shifter. There are three different ways for a '65 727 to not go in Reverse and the cable link accounts for two of them

I've had 4 cars that were actually my own. First was a 1957 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller wagon, real wood trim (think even part of the frame was wood--is that possible?), black w/red leather interior, 5-spd.

Then came many years of driving one of my auto-nut husband's endless string of cars--Morgan, MG TD/TF/A, Austin Healey (2 at least), Cadillac Seville, Mercedes (3), etc. etc. etc.

When the kids got to driving age I got so sick of having them take all my stuff out of the car I considered mine (clothes to go to the cleaner, library books to return, sunglasses, etc.) & change all the auto settings on the radio if they just drove 3 blocks for a gallon of milk, I demanded a personal car--all keys to be in my possession. It was a 1986 Toyota Cressida wagon, silver w/grey leather. Beautiful, wonderful, car. Wrecked it on ice in 1990.

Third was my 1991 Isuzu Trooper II I drove for 13 years & loved like a child; just lost it to frame rot this winter.

After driving the new Subaru Forester & Outback, Hyundai Sante Fe, Honda Element, & others I've mercifully forgotten, I stumbled on a mint condition 1996 red XJ Classic w/decent mileage (90000ish) & fell in love w/it because it looks & drives so like my Trooper. Same firm ride & steering, great visibility, MANUAL d/w/sunroof, beautiful boxy shape. (Sure hope it's as reliable as the Trooper: besides tires & LOF, that car cost me almost exactly $1500 in maintenance over 13 years!) I read every Jeep board on the web for several weeks before I bought it, doing research; & now that it's mine I've joined two of them (Ultimate Jeep & NAXJA) for help in making it my LAST car. I hate auto shopping.

Sorry to run on so. Got caught up in reminiscence.

Until the end of March, I'd been driving/building/wheeling a 91 longbed MJ. It was officially in my dad's name - and he bought it new - but that was just a paperwork matter. Besides, I'm Phil Jr. :D

Now I'm in a 1994 2-dr XJ. It's got the 4.0L, AW-4, Hack'n'tapped 231, and my spooled 4.88ed MJ D44 is going to go under it - along with my MT/Rs - once I get an insurance settlement. Hopefully, it's inaugural run, for me anyhow, will be the Rubicon in June. I can't wait to enjoy all the work I did on the MJ. :looser:

Not my first car, nor even really my car at all, but long ago on a job we had as our work vehicle a '60 Valiant wagon with the pushbutton shift. It was a non-profit organization, and the car had been donated. This particular one had a couple of issues. The tailgate hinges had fallen off, so it couldn't be opened, and one of the door hinges had also fallen off. It had a hole in the transmission modulator, so it burned about a quart of fluid every hundred miles or so, and took about 10 seconds to engage in gear from neutral. It also was MISSING an upper ball joint. That's right, the top of the knuckle assembly just rested in the hole where the ball joint had been. The right front wheel was seriously decambered. It tracked a little funny, but cornered great. So anyway, one day a colleague parked the thing on a hill while it was running, set the brake and put it into park. The brake was of course useless, and it jumped out of park and rolled into a tree, and the fan hit the radiator. It wasn't worth fixing, so we immediately drove it to the dump. By the time we got there, it had lost all its coolant and was really cooked. We just left it there, ticking and hissing and smoking. That's how you drive a slant six into the ground.

1992 Jeep Cherokee. My dad installs garage doors so we traded the guy that owned it 2 garage doors for the Jeep. It was wrecked at the time so he gave us all the parts to fix it. We layed in the garage all winter while working a couple hours at night after my dad got home from work. It was two wheel drive so we swapped that out for a AW4 tranny and a NP242 Transfer Case. My first vehicle was a 94 Geo Tracker 4x4. Stock except for a pair of Kenwood 6x9s and Rockford 8" woofer boxes w/tweeters (it was one or the other plugged in, only had 1 pair of wires). It was my Mom's that she gave me when she bought her Lumina. The first I bought was a 92 Isuzu Trooper. The first repo'd was the 92 Isuzu Trooper. Never missed a payment, but after paying $7500 for it, I found out the motor was dying, and then the transmission blew on the highway. CHP gave me one day to come get it, then impounded it. This was at the CHP scales on I10, after he had watched me sit there with it for 5 hrs waiting for someone to come pick me up. No one had a truck to tow it with. When I found out where it was (2 weeks later) the impound fees were almost $2000, and towing back to base in 29 would've been almost another grand. I just got my stuff and left it there. The bank repo'd it before it was auctioned. I still had to pay them back for it though. I then reacquired the Tracker which my Mom had kept for me upon returning from overseas, and crashed it, bought a $500 90 Samurai that ran on 3 cylinders (out of 4), leaked oil, and had a transfer case that only worked in 2Hi. Traded that in on my 96 XJ and got exactly $500 for it. All I lost in that deal was the $200 for a pair of BFG ATs. The XJ is easily the best in my line of not so great cars. The Tracker was second, even if you frgive the Isuzu of its non-running times...

I "inherited" my dad's '87 Mazda B2000 pick-up. Which was turned into a slammed cruiser. 15" (17"or 18" were way too $$ in 1993!) billet wheels, shaved tailgate and emblems, custom paint, lots of stereo, tweed interior, etc, etc. I think he bought the truck new in '87 for like $6500, and I had over $7000 in receipts for "extras". Thus the start of my customizing life. 11 years of driving and 10 vehicles later, in my 3rd XJ (1 YJ and 2 TJs). The only XJ I really want now (to keep) is a black 60th Anniv, the current 'rokee will do for now.

What was your first vehicle, and how did you get it ?

1969 Saab Model 96. Damn thing ran like hell. Had one of the rare V4 with REAL ball bearings for the mains. I was told the RPMs topped out over 10K. Ran like a bat outta hell until I was driving I-70 to Denver, east, and one of the u-joints in the front gave out. Doing 65 and twisted the right axle til it broke, threw me into a ditch and fried the tranny (transaxle) and snapped the crankshatft due to the torque. It sucked!

Now I'm looking for one to fix up as a hobby. The damn things are worth a pretty penny now. There extremly rare.

1983 Chevy 3/4ton 2WD I inherited it with no engine and a bad tranny, I had the tranny rebuilt and then threw in a nicely built 400 Small block and proceeded to go through a set of rear tires each week, I could buy used tires from school for CHEAP so I would smoke off a set in a week or 2, until I over revved the engine trying to race some stupid VW and threw a rod through the side of the block. I liked that truck alot it got me and my dirtbike around, as well as freinds bikes and whatever else I needed to haul. I miss having a truck.

I had one of these! IIRC, it was a 1973. Loved the thing - it had really fun handling. It also had the freewheel with the mind of its own that nearly killed me when it kicked in without my realising it. Once I got used to that, though, it was great to drive. Had to sell it due to a move, though.

Now I'm looking for one to fix up as a hobby. The damn things are worth a pretty penny now. There extremly rare.

They keep popping up in the Recycler out here every once in a while, and I see them on eBay. A good candidate for a rolling restoration looks like it shouldn't run you more than $1500-$2000.

A used 1986 Nissan pickup, 5-speed bought in 1990. The last year they made them with 4 headlights - I liked the boxy look. Cost me $2000 I think. I then sold my KX80 (dirtbike) to buy new tires for it :) Beat the heck out of it and the only thing I ever broke was a leaf spring.

My parents gave me a 1980 Chrysler Lebaron Coupe when I was 15 because the dealer wouldn't give them anything for it for a trade. Only lasted a little while because the subframe rusted out from sitting around so much. First car I bought was a '69 Barracuda Fastback. Sold that to my parents in '96 to buy my first Jeep (88 MJ).

1959 English Ford Prefect (it was a 4-door; the 2-door model is the "Anglia). Bought it for $25 - it ran but had a bad 3 speed manual transmission. Found a parts car and between the two of them was able to cobble together a working transmission. The only problem was that the 1st/reverse sliding gear had one tooth missing (hey, I was 15 at the time!) and it uesd to make a helluva racket whenever I took off in 1st gear or used reverse. It was fun to tinker with and to drive around in the field behind the house. Mom used to get upset when I'd drive back there when she had the wash out to dry on the clothesline as I'd kick up a lot of dust. Life was so much simpler then.........and yes, I'm an old fart!

1977 (?) Fiat 127 (http://www.cabbala.net/fiat127/main.shtml), age 13. This is the car that the Yugo was based on, but actually had fairly decent mechanicals. Didn't stop it from rusting to hell after I ran it all over the fields learning to drive, though. Got it when my mother bought a Honda Civic to replace it.

The first car I legally put on the road was a 1982 Ford Capri (http://www.fordcapri.co.uk/) 1.6LS. Great car, but didn't handle worth a damn. Nearly killed me after I put it head-on into a stone wall going 60 courtesy of a patch of black ice.

1977 olds cutlass 442 basically a cutlass supreme with 442 decals 350 rocket v8 and auto on the floor . Bought it for $100 pass. side door was wired shut because the door latch didnt work , had 3 different size tires, windshield leaked when it rained, and if it was below 40 degrees out it would only start by spraying either down the carb. A REAL S**T BOX!! but I drove it for a year then tore it apart and destroyed it in a demolition derby.

I got a 1984 Jeep Cherokee just before I turned 16. It had a 2 inch lift and 30 inch bf goodrich tires. I beat the hell out of that thing and it still went. I've still got it, 265,000 miles on it. I plan to cut the weight back and make some major mods, put on a 6 inch lift, probably 33's. I've got a 12 bolt going in the back. Should be an awesome vehicle when I'm done.

My first and only, my 95 Cherokee. I've been driving it for the 3 years since I got my license and have constantly been working on it and upgrading it, a little at a time. I totaled it a little while back and as soon as I get home from school I'm going to start the rebuild (it's going to be the best spring break ever!)

I liked my XJ to begin with, then I got in the crash. Any other vehicle and I probably would have rolled it or flipped it, and who knows if I could have walked away from that. And to top it all off, most of the damage is only cosmetic! Man I love Cherokees!!! :laugh3:

And who would want to kill such a nostalgic thread? I mean come on, it's history!

my first car was a 1970 Chevy Vega Wagon. I put more oil in that car than gas. It smelled from spilled beer and spilled bong water. Drove around in the winter with the windows open. Looked like a Cheech and Chong movie.

My other car was a 1969 Plymouth Baracuda, MOPAR. it was yellow. I painted it silver with a flat black hood and black Landau roof. Beautiful! Someday I'll learn how to scan a picture. We blew the engine when we had it floored on the Highway coming back home to Chicago from Wisconsin at about three in the morning. We had it buried for about four or five minutes without letting up!! (Beer and bong water) We rebuilt the engine and started over.

Thanks for making me remember some good times and good friends.

1970 Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 pickup. I paid my brother 100 bucks for it in 1992 when I was 16. Also my first engine rebuild a month later. It's amazing the looks you get with a rusted out ugly truck with a 440 big block blowing away the new camaro and mustangs that the rich kids parents bought them.....

Too bad someone in a pontiac pulled out in front of it and it rolled 4 time end over end two years later. That's when I bought my first jeep, a 1976 CJ-5. I've had 5 jeeps and 2 dodge trucks since. Still have 3 of the jeeps. 1989 XJ, 1992 XJ, and a 2003 Liberty.

Hmm... Did I post in here yet? Well, I'm bored.

1980 Pontiac Lemans 2 Dr when I was 14. It was a decent starter car and had a strong V6, IIRC.
1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme when I was 16. We special ordered it. No half top, v8, 4bbl, it had the same build as the Hurst package that year, but without the "ticket me" paint job. Took 8 months to get it, and someone rear ended the LeMans trade in the day the Olds came off the truck.
1993 Nissan Quest (first year, for the wife, we're no longer married, she still has it)
1998 Harley Davidson Fat Boy -- daily driver, modded at Zippers, got more than I paid for it when I sold it in 2000 (was trying to appease the wife, didn't work, should have kept the bike)
2000 Dodge Ram with the 5.9 gass hog (sold it right before the divorce)
2002 Subaru WRX -- too much work done to list, and it was quite the looker (was my "look what I can do" car after the divorce, lol)
2001 XJ -- sold the WRX and picked this one up.... needed to slow down and enjoy the view, mission accompished.
