Im thinking about going down in tire size since 99.9% of my driving is on streets for now.
Question...Will moving from 31's to 235's look wicked funny on a 4" lift?

No experience with this, but I wouldn't imagine that you would gain much in the mileage department from a 31->235 switch. It certainly would take a long time to recoup the cost of the tires. If you were needing to get new tires anyway, I suppose thats a different story.

meh, my road tires are 205's on a 4" lift with fenders cut for 34's.

sure it looks funny, but it get's me 22 on the highway.

Here's half-worn 235x75s on 3" (and 4.56 gears :), if it helps your decision.

theyre 31x10.5's. Airing them up makes my ride super crap...remember right now im 99.9% on road.

Buying gears and the install would run about 1k huh?

buy a commuter car, grow some balls and wheel the xj.

thats just what i did.

$500 hatchback 30mpg more money for the jeep.
