Siping

I have searched and searched but cannot figure this out; what is siping and how is it done? Please don't flame me!

Siping is adding little "slices" to the treadblocks on your tires. This improves thier traction as thier are more gripping surfaces on the tread. It greatly improves wet weather traction as well as traction on snow and ice. If you are only an on road driver, it helps keep the tread cool as well, making your tires last longer.

The downfall, is if you wheel a lot in rock or are a "spirited" driver. Then your tires can chunk as the siping breaks little pieces of tread off.

I see, so this would be a good thing for me to do since there is a lot of snow in NH.

Sure would. If you are wary of doing it youself, there are plenty of tire shops that do it.

I know this is an old thread, but when siping is it better to go horizontal accross the tread blocks or verticle?

I'd guess horizontal?
