OK so my sister broke down yesterday (2000 Saturn LS2 V6) got it home (thnks Dennis) Cranked but wouldnt start ended up taking it to a shop to daignose the problem after I ran out of tricks.

Mechanic found that the CPS was bad installed a new one tried cranking it almost started then immedieatly back to just cranking. Further inspection found that the sensor was again broken He removed it, then had someone bump the starter while he looked into the sensor hole. Doing this he found that sensor ring was damaged and that there was a good size peice of metel floating around. Unknown orgine

So time for a new engine. She would like to have it done by this weekend she needs to get home asap ( nebraska) Triying to find a shop to completley replace the engine with a rebuilt or low mileage one rather than trying to rebuild.

Looking for a shop in the IE wanted to ask around for recomendations or suggestions.

TIA
Paul

You're smoking heroin right? 1 quart of oil per 800 miles is considered acceptable consumption on a saturn motor, per dealership spec.

THe only saturn I would own would be a the roadster one. On the other hand, my coworker's saturn was beat all to hell and kept running until it hit about 150K miles...

Back to the topic at hand, foreign piece of metal does not necessarily mean a new motor. Maybe it was a metal ring piece from the sensor itself or better yet, maybe a crank bolt came out....

I'd drop the oil pan, and see what is in there. If its a 2000, isnt it still under warranty?

They were pulling the engine when I got there this afternoon. To early to tell, but appers either a rod or broken crank shaft.

Anywho she is getting a used engine with 50k on it. They are going to change the timing belt, water pump, radiator, hoses, belts, fluids, with instalation for 2500 or possibly a little less and it will be done by this weekend. Seems to be a top notch guy. He said that if he wasent satisfied with the engine he would reject it and find one that was in better condition.

Do you need some money for the tire dennis?

Nope, just glad that we were able to get her to where you could get it fixed pretty quick. Hopefully it all works well.

Anytime I can give a helping hand I will.

As far as Saturns go.

2000 Saturn SL2/SC2/SW2
Oil Consumption Diagnosis

Important: Complaints of high engine oil consumption are not always thoroughly investigated before major repairs are performed. During initial engine break in, it is normal for the engine to use from 1-3 quarts of oil during the first 3,000-6,000 miles, depending on driving conditions.

Check the engine for external oil leakage and the air intake and PCV systems for excessive oil pull over.
Change the engine oil and filter. Four quarts of oil are required to properly fill the crankcase.
Reset the "Change Oil Soon" telltale lamp. Refer to Lubrication.
Warm the engine up and check the oil level after approximately 10 minutes with vehicle on a level surface. Note exactly where the dipstick reads, relative to the dipstick full mark.
Inform the customer an oil consumption test is now in progress and any oil added must be documented.
Record the vehicle's mileage, date of oil change and exact location of oil level on the Customer Service Order and the "Oil Consumption Test" worksheet.
Have the customer check the engine oil level at each fuel fill and return the vehicle if the oil level is at the "ADD" mark. If the oil level remains in the "CROSS HATCH" area, have the customer continue operating the vehicle for a minimum of 2,000 miles before returning the vehicle for final oil consumption verification. - If the engine uses more than 1 quart of oil in 2,000 miles after the initial 3,000 mile break in period, document oil consumption usage on the Customer Service Order and perform a compression check as outlined in this section.
• If cylinder compression is found within acceptable limits, replace the valve stem seals.
• If compression is not found within acceptable limits, perform engine cylinder leakage test and crankcase pressure check. Repair as necessary.
- If the engine does not use more than 1 quart of oil in 2,000 miles after the initial 3,000 mile break in period, oil consumption is considered to be normal.

Are you sure it's an LS2 v6. Because it doesn't exist in the manufacturers website.

I think the car has over 100k. So in theory, no more warranty...It is a pretty clean car tho, and was heavy as hell to push up a trailer in 115 deg desert heat. What ever the cost is, I prob would be doing the same as the motor replacement.

Paul, where is that beer, I ammmmmmm thirsty.......<jk, no worries...

well took the car to a shop near my house the engine was a total loss and needed to be replaced. Turns out the #6 connecting rod broke into atleast 6 pecies went all through the motor and ended up in the oil pan.

The guy got her a used replacement with less than 50k on it and chanded/replaced
water pump
timing belt
radiator
hoses
motor/trans mounts
fan relay cluster
and some other sensors
alternator

Dropped it off monday afternoon and got it back saturday morning.

all of the above for 2500. which is what other shops quoted me just to swap out the motor.
