Looking for trail maps, ratings, info, guides, web sites, etc. for So Cal.

I used to wheel a YJ, but that was 10+ years ago, and I was a follower. I just picked up an '88 XJ, had the mechanic give it the once over. Lifted it and put tires on. Working on the other things.

Ran through Azusa today with the kid, we had fun, but will enjoy trail adventures much more than open space.

I need to know where to get Trail maps and info!

Are these books good?

The Fun Trek books are good, so are the 4WD books Backcountry Adventures: http://www.4wdbooks.com/products.aspx?catID=1

They cover northern and southern California in seperate books, but they only do the lower rated trails (i.e. no Johnson Valley, Rubicon, etc.)

What type of wheeling do you want to do? Easy green circle trails, moderate blue squares or hard black diamond? Rock crawling or scenic cruising and exploring?

The two books by Charles Wells are good, as is the Backcountry Adventures series by Massey and Wilson. The individual forest maps are a good to have also.

I like the Sidekick maps http://www.sidekickoffroad.com/

I have the Big Bear and Johnson Valley maps. They sell the Big Bear map at the Discovery Center.

The back country books do give a good description however most of the trails listed in the SoCal book are either closed access now or the trail head routes have changed.
