4xSanta, my Dad, rolled his jeep last night 5 times end over end on Cleghorn totalling the jeep, running gear look fine though. The body was twisted and the engine was tired before the roll so now he can start off with a new body and do it right.

Some pics of when it he bought it from the bigtex guy in Texas:

Like I said in the other thread, If I am available and its not insanely far away, Id love to pitch in and lend a hand to getting a new rig built for Santa. So keep us updated, I can always haul parts up from San Diego as well if you need anything from this neck of the woods.

It was "OK", but it showed signs of stress in several critical places. Given the option, a new cage would be better; but I would not hesitate to run that cage before no cage..

I think santa needs to build a new cage and sell me his old for a 12 pack. ;)

I think that it will be easier to tell how the cage held up after the roof is cut off.

I don't think that it would be too difficult to cut the top part off the cage then build a new bottom half that would attatch to the top half with i.d. sleeves. About an inch or so of headroom could be recovered as well. because it can be almost touching the roof.

cal
July 8th, 2007, 15:04
There are stress marks at the A pillars and D? (rearmost legs), the paint is cracked and distorted. I'd still trust it in a heartbeat, but given circumstance Santa might want more reassurance than that. :)

He drove down from Big Bear this morning and went to the doctor, my brother said that he would not help him unload the jeep until he did. They said that there was nothing in there to damage, just a little air, it was probably ATF and not blood coming from his head.

Ya' know...I was just out in the garage (only for a moment..its F*ing hot out there) and started thinking that if Ken wasn't willing to go have it looked at that I just might need to take a trip to Costa Mesa this afternoon...
I sure am glad there won't be a need for that trip.
Glad he is going to be fine....but one thing....if Ken has a head ache now, what did the Doc say about that?

Okay....maybe I'm stepping a bit out of bounds....you can guess why someone like ME would have any extra concerns..

He told ME on the phone that the doc gave him "three weeks to live" but everything else is where it suppose to. He probably just went to the strip club or Frys and looked at the girls then said that he went to the hospital. I told him to fix the jeep in those three weeks, I dont want to deal with his mess.

Do I need to be more specific with my tips?
:gag:

The rear tire should follow the front tire in a LINEAR pattern , not circular as in end over end over end over end over... you get the picture.

I figured you would find a way to blame it on someone else!

Houston we have touch down! Sleigh II has landed successfully in Santa's garage. Work will begin immediately to prepare for lift-off with the Moab Fall Fling being the deadline to shoot for, Sleigh II will undergo intense testing at Moab to work out any bugs.

This is a 1994 Jeep Cherokee with an inline six cylinder engine. It is a 4x4 and has an automatic transmission. It has 174,000 miles on it, a recent brake and lube job. I put bigger tires on it about a year ago, which makes it look more rugged. The paint is good and the interior is clean, except for a few spots in the back.

Scrap old body.To do on Sleigh II:

Possibly strip dash and build custom.
Cut out wheelwells (purchase spot welder?)
Skin inside door panels with sheetmetal.

Incorporate new suspension seat mounts in cage.
Install seats and harnesses.
Reinforce steering box mount and front frame.
Mock up cage and add additions (front hoop, halo, etc).
Have 'cage welded in.
Paint cage
Herculine bottom half of body white?
Cut out and install escape hatch/sunroof.
Powdercoat and install lebaron hood vents (thanks lamula).
Install Acrylic rear windows, limo tint the rest.
Replace Sleigh I's transfercase with Sleigh II's 4:1 'case.
Strip axles and suspension off.
Sell transfer case, axles, suspension, bumpers, etc.
Install and reinforce suspension mounting points.
Install Sleigh II's axles and suspension.
Design new shock setup (coilovers?hydrobumps?resevoirs?)
Mount PSC pump and ram.
Install tranny cooler.

#6 is Very difficult. You might like my method or at least concider it an option.

I used a 20" wide piece of 3/16 plate and ran that from the front floor board area about even with the Ebrake handle back to the rear seat area body reinforcment that goes side to side, and it is as close to the door frame floor area as poss. It is notched in a few areas and was a PITA to get to mold to the contures, but found that the floor board also molds to the flat plate well. Then I welded it to the floor that entire length, and bolted it to the floor in the center area in 3 spots (1/2" bolts) just at the unibody rail where it turns flat, as well as did a 4x4" angle at the unibody rail out to the rocker area and sandwiched the floor with 3 more 1/2" bolts thru that angle and through the plate inside the cab. Basically I have a 3/16" floor that it tied to the unibody rail conpletely.

Then just make mounts that tie directly to that 3/16" plate. Other wise your going to have hell trying to get tube to span side to side and tie the seats to the cage. Not only will it raise the seats, bad for int cage headroom, but you also have a PITA fitment of tube between the center hump and the seat sides in the center section. And the drivers side hump in any case will get pounded down significantly.

I dont know if any of these pictures show it well. But I will attach some in case you can see what I am talking about. Then you can also just tie the cage in to the floor plating. in the B pillar area.

Just thought I would share. I know it was hell tring to get the seats in that I have and there was no way to rub tube side to side, without lifting the seats at least a few inches, and that was not an option for me.

then on the frame, but of course you would want to weld it once its bolted together :looney:

Chopped the roof, not much stress on the cage visable, just around the rear "X" on the roof line. The drivetrain will be coming off in the next couple of weeks. And sleigh II will be in the garage.

Yep, gotta love the old Bronco's. Had a 76 myself. 302 c4 (only Auto4x4 I've had) . Only thing is they're very heavy and too thin skinned. plus they are about a foot wider than the XJ which makes tight trails like the Dusey a little more interesting. Still love'm though.
