is it possible to get an amp, sub, speakers, head unit and everything else needed for $500-700? Will it still sound decent

No not really. A decent Headunit is going to cost $200 - $250. Then you got the speakers, you can get Kicker speakers for $60-$70 a pair. A sub and amp is what's going to really hurt. A mono amp will cost about $150-$175 and a sub about $100. Then the box, wiring, fuses. No way, Why don't you do what you can now, start with the head unit. I recommend Pioneer myself, and then work on decent coax speakers.

put the 500 towards the head unit/speakersand you wil have a really good starting point, then save up for a mild sub setup for a lil extra bass

Make sure the head unit has bluetooth built in, it comes in handy...

It's easy to stay under that if you buy used. try browsing craigslist for stuff. I only have about 400 into mine and it sounds just fine. Walmart had a pretty good head unit for cheap, it was a Pioneer that came with 2 crappy paper cone 6 1/2" door speakers. I paid 120 for it, and it works great, has a remote and plays mp3 discs. the only real drawback is that to hookup an mp3 player you have to buy the 30 dollar Pioneer hookup, which plugs in in the back, then run the cord to the front somewhere. as far as door speakers, i have all pioneer stuff that runs about 40 bucks a pair. And for the Sub i have a 12" Pioneer sub in a bandpass box, with a 300w Orion amp. I paid 120 for the sub and box, and 30 for the amp on ebay.
all added up, including a little for wiring, its right around 400.

yeah its quite possible. i did all mine for about 450 roughly. an alpine head unit which ran about $170? got it for my first car. installed it in my jeep. 2 12" alpine type R's, a kenwood amp, and wires. i did it in steps though, i already had the h/u so i just did the subs and amp. installing it yourself will save you a lot of money, it wont look as pretty but you'll save like $500. stock speakers in mine sound good, and the subs sound kickass.

Well I have around 500 put into mine. 1 JBL 500W dual-channel sub amp, 1 MTX 12" Thunder 5500 sub (dual voice coils), 2 three-way diamond speakers for the front, and a kennwood excelon deck...

I am huge on music, so I play shit from Mars Volta to Tool, and the sub commands me to play rediculous amounts of rap... it's like a god damn crack addiction. Props on doing it on your own- you'll save huge amounts (kinda like uh.. the pieces of shit we talk about on NAXJA)

And, all the way from Mars Volta to Tool? What is that range, about four bands all in the same genre?

Plus, dude, put down the rap CD and back slowly away from the stereo...

:D

Haha, I hear you on that one!

But yeah you could prolly do it for that price range, but your sacrificing quality and features, or your hunting around for getting used parts.

I have quite a bit of money in my sound system, but I love my music..
280 in the head unit, 200 in the speakers, 60 in wiring, 100 in capacitor, 250 in one sub, 200 in the amp, 100 in the sirius tuner, 100 yearly in sirius subscription..
