2002 Grand Tranny Problem

My friend has a 2002 ZJ and the tranny has been acting up lately. It basically doesnt want to shift. It will go up to about 4K before shifting and going into overdrive. THe shift is also somewhat abrupt and it is not smooth.

Anyone have any problems like this or know what it is?

Is it tranny oil related or am I completely wrong on that?

2002 will be a WJ.
