Stock Muffler Size

Need some help please,

Got four different prices from local parts stores on mufflers, ranging from $28 - $84.00. I was told that "universal" mufflers will NOT fit my 1996 XJ, and that I HAVE to get the $84 direct fit one.

Can someone tell me the stock intlet and outlet pipe size on the stock 96 XJ muffler? and, whether that measurement is inside diameter and outside diameter??

I dont want to wrestle with the old one, only to find out the new one doesnt fit!

I believe it's a 2.25" offset inlet-outlet. I installed a Flowmaster Delta 50 muffler (p/n 942451) a few years ago, and it fit fine. http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/products/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3389

why would I ever pay $84 for a muffler for my heep when i could have one for $28 from consumer auto parts?
