whats the difference between np242 j and a np242 i got a 99 cherokee and need to replace the transfer case. i know a guy with a grand cherokee he wants to sell his t case me and its np242 j and mine is np242. i was also wondering how mucch a rebuilt one is estimated?

Yours is also a -242J
Look closely at the tag on the rear; J stands for Jeep.

I can't think of any spline count/length issues with that...what year is the Grand?

I went and looked at an 89 cherokee with a vacuum disconnect axle and it had a 231 in it. My 96 has a 231j with a non vacuum disconnect axle. Does the j mean non vac.?

The J wasn't always there. Not sure if the 231 and 242 spline and shaft revisions are the same, but here is some info - http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np231.htm
