Say it ain't so, Joe
Say it ain't so

Seriously though, here is some park info from Ron Maximoff, the owner:

The park has 850 acres of moderate to steep hills and gullies along with dry creek bed trails. Our 25 trails that are currently open are rated Easy, Intermediate, or Extreme. The park leans heavily towards the intermediate and extreme which you won't see in one visit (some trails you may not even be able to complete), with enough easy to keep most drivers entertained. The easy trails are for the smaller tired vehicles but they're still trails, not logging roads, that have to be driven so no whining!! There will be plenty of trail guides available to show your groups around until you get used to the trail system. The trails are all marked and you will be given a color trail map at sign-up. Also, if anyone wishes to bring an ATV or motorcycle (we have a professionally designed motocross track in the park and ATV trails) they are required to wear a helmet.

We have 5 mountain lined meadows that we keep mowed for primitive camping equipped with porta-toilets, fire pits and free firewood. There's no electric or water. There are several full facility campgrounds in the area along with cabin rentals one mile from the entrance to the park.

We are 2 miles from the Currrent River, and have an agreement with Jadwin Canoe Rental that will pick your people up for a float trip down the Current River and then drop them back off at the park. Note: They are responsible for making their own arrangements--info about Jadwin Canoe Rental is available on our web-site at www.flatnasty.net.

We are located 15 miles from Salem with hospitals, 3 auto parts stores, restaurants, Wal-Mart, etc. There is a convenience store one mile from the entrance to the park which has gasoline, beer, liquor and camping supplies along with a small grill for a quick meal.

Barton's Campground is about 1-2 miles from the park.
It has a few multiple bedroom mobile homes available, (1) RV hookup, and primitive camping.
Prices are:
- $15/night/person for the mobile homes.
- $10/night for the RV hookup
- $3/person/night for the primitive campsites.
Mobile home BR are 1st come basis.

On a personal note.
This place is awesome.
The trails are great and the owner bends over backwards to take care of us
No one will be disappointed

This is a new convenience to me... used to be that I was at least 5 hours from everything when we were highly Attica-centric. Must be my year to shine! You know Joe, you could fly into STL and ride down with me, since you don't wheel yours anyway.

Can't wait. Just have to decide on which heep to bring. The woody that can flex great but is greatly underpowered or the 96 that can't flex at all but has plenty of power? We will see which one is running come Feb.
Just hope there isn't a blizzard or some shit when we go to leave.:D

A properly equipped 1/2 ton would probably be OK in the midwest.

Not sure if RV rental companys want you towing anything, especially a trailer. With the long rear overhang on most RVs, they're not good with a lot of tongue weight.

Jasons Cabins 25 miles South of Salem 800-333-5628
$90 a night for two people
ample parking for trailers

Reeds Cabins 22 miles to Salem 573-548-2222
$73 per night for two people
ample parking for trailers

Holiday Inn Express In Salem 866-729-9598
$85 per night for two people
i forgot to ask about trailer parking

Ranch Motel in Salem 573-729-3157
$55 per night for two people
ample parking for trailers

Scenic River Motel in Salem 573-663-7722
$52.00 per night for two people
ample parking for trailers

Walnut Motel in Salem 573-729-3121
$38.00 per night for two people
ample parking for trailers

Scenic Rivers Inn 573-674-4809
Licking MO 22 miles to Salem
Has an Indoor pool and all the amenities.
$55.00 per night for two people
ample room for trailers.

Most of these motels probably only have about 16 rooms.
Maybe we should pick one Motel so we stay together as a group.
The guy at Scenic River Motel seemed friendly enough.

Trust me, if I can get ahold of a thousand dollars to pay for the last round of repairs done to my Jeep, another few hundred to replace the radiator and maybe the engine, and fifteen hundred dollars for gas, all while still being able to afford to pay not only the fifteen hundred dollar tuition bill for the spring semester, but the tuition and fees for a class I need to take at another university (which will cost almost twice the entire tuition at my community college), I'll be at Winterfest. Well, we were planning on going but the last we checked it was going to be at rockport or something like that. But the new location is 560 miles (10 hours) each way. So I doubt we will be able to make the journey down. We would like to provide lunch on saturday like we did last year, so have someone contact us if you guys can find someone to grill. We will also through some stuff in for the raffle. Just have whoever is in charge of that this year get ahold of us.

I have a 2000 with the re 3.5 full pack, 31 at's, getting my locker in the mail this week, but from what ive read i need 32's and some more stuff to be able to run some real trails, are the green trails worth coming for, or should i wait a bit and get my jeep fully up to speed for trails before i come? Thanks

Bring it however you'd like, but you'll have fun either way. There will be trails for all skill levels. Stockers to hardcore and everything in between. Don't not come because you don't think you're "hardcore enough". That's the last thing we want. IMHO, it's best to learn the capabilities of your vehicle before moving on to bigger and "better". IOW, run it like it is!

Hope to see you there!

Ditto to what Mike said, but let me add something. You could have the best built rig that is capable of doing extreme trails, but unless you have some idea how to drive that vehicle, it'll never happen. Come out regardless how your Jeep is built and run. As you gain some confidence, you'll push yourself and eventually move past the ablility of your Jeep. Then the addiction kicks in and really affects you pocketbook. ;)

As a side note, there are some trails there, that your rig is set up fine for. They will definately give you some pucker. Keep in mind you may get a little (or a lot) of damage ... this is a very real possibility in this sport.

I ran 3" lift and 31 mt's and open axles at the Big Dogs Run and had a good time. I did get hung up on some rocks before giving up on one trail, but I had a great time. I'll be running the same setup at Winterfest. Can't wait to represent the small lift crowd.

My first winterfest was run on 31" all seasons with no lift, and I had a blast.
Really its more fun around the campfire than anything else.

You'll be surprised what your XJ can do stock. You will have time to try out your Jeep, and if you want to see the more extreme stuff, you can find a seat to ride in. If you have all the required equipment, you can run it stock.

In other words, just show up. You will be glad you did.:)

Non-members can be invited guests....we can get you invited. :D

Tow points are a biggie.....a big biggie.

Even if your Jeep won't pass...show up for at least the campfire, and dinner. There is always a chance someone will have an open seat.

Sorry I couldn't go this year... the Midwest Jeepthing club supports the rally and I worked as heavy sweep. Dano didn't get his rig fixed so he couldn't even make it to Flat Nasty on Sunday.

I was there on Sunday and saw a couple other NAXJA folks. We ended up in "rescue mode" after a TJ had a nasty roll-over-and-play-dead episode. The driver was LUCKY to say the least and only got 2 torn ligaments in his knee after being thrown out and the rig rolling over him (yeah, wasn't wearing his seatbelt).

Ron (the owner of the park) and I got his rig butter side up w/ some crafty winchin' and it actually cranked and got up to the road on it's own power.

That took up about half the time we had for wheeling so shortly after we headed back to St. Louis :)

Well, I got my rig back into shape so I'm looking forward to being more active on here and getting together with you all soon!

Yes. He was almost to the top and his back left tire slid about a foot and just started to roll. They were lucky that I decided to show the wife that trail because if we would of not been there his wife would of had a long walk to find help because they were wheeling alone.

Well, it was a great thing you were there and had a CB and had the presence of mind to call for help and get the ball rolling. Granted, the guy had luck on his side, but had his injuries been more severe your quick work got help to him ASAP and you're the one who should be thanked!
