Building a bastard pack

It's half price weekend at the pull-your-part so I figured I would try my hand at building a bastard pack to replace the 4.5" RE Super-Flex (stock leafs with a block and AAL: http://www.rubiconexpress.com/Products.aspx?Cn=188&Pn=2020&XnPath=173,180,188&Vid=E64F3E2021055).

From what I can tell I need to look for an S-10 '82-'93, S-15 '82-'93, Sonoma '82-'93, S-10 Blazer '83-'94, S-15 Jimmy '83-'94 or possibly a Bravada '91-'94 as a donor.

Is there any difference in 2WD vs. 4WD? I haven't found anything definitive other than the one really good write up uses 2WD leafs (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50083).

I think I'm going to stay with the S-10 ones for now since it seems the consensus is they ride a bit nicer than the Dakotas at the expense of some flex. But hey if I find a Dakota at the yard I'll probably pull them too :D

In the end it looks like I'll need to use the stock XJ eye leaf and all of the S-10 pack minus the overload to get close to 4.5" without the block and AAL.

Should I also get a RE or similar shackle and possibly a coil spacer up front to even things out?

You are right on track. You need to get the 2WD only as I think the 4WD are spring over. Definitely get a shackle as it will help flex then even out the front as needed. Don't pay more than $50 for the set of leaves, I got mine for $35 if I remember right. Good luck.
