Anyone live around Montrose? I am thinking about applying for a job there and would like some input on the area, cost of living, general impressions, etc.
Thanks,
Glen

We considered a lot of towns during our hunt. We researched for about 2 years and made sure we hit every town. We tried to keep an open mind and not give a thumbs up or down upon rolling into town. Montrose was one of the few towns that we did not like at all right away. We both glanced at each other after driving around and smiled. It was a few hours later that we both said we didn't like it at the same time.
Black Canyon is near by and that's incredible. There are some fantastic towns that are weekend trips away. However, It felt too much like O'Fallon, MO to us. Tons of fast food restaurant chains, hardly any of that funky flavor to the town, and what looked to be serious urban sprawl. It's a fairly big town. It was definitely bigger than I wanted. Although, I was interviewing for positions in towns like Silverton, and Buena Vista. I also wanted to be higher up and live in a mountain town that had some history to it.

Ive got a buddy that lives in Montrose. I like the town for the location but Hwy 550 that runs thru it can be a pain.
If you wanna PM me an email address I will forward it to Terry and Iam sure he can let you know what you wanna know.

Top 10 reasons why we'll probably buy in Montrose.
1. My mom likes it, and it's got a good deal of distance from my marina.
2. It's cheap
3. Cactus
4. Upper Cactus
5. Die Trying
6. Calamity Canyon
7. BV is an easy overnite run.
8. Billings is a day run away.
9. 21 Road is a day run away.
10. Easy overnite runs at Moab.

if you're looking for the small mountain town feel, Crested Butte is what you want. From Montrose, go East to the other side of Back Canyon to Gunnison(second choice) then north 30 miles. The town itself is about a square mile. I lived there for 5 years and badly want to move back.

Look at the real-estate difference and job market from the Butte to Montrose though.

Montrose is pretty much in par with Grand Junction. I'd say the median on housing will be around $150-180 range. Good sized airport if you travel. Jobs? Depends on what you do for $$$. Location, South is the San Juans, SW is the Uncompadre, NW is the Grand Mesa, East is Blue Mesa Res. All in all not a bad place.
Beats New Mexico :D
