Knocking

Running Project

All right this is flipping crazy. I have an 88 cherokee limited 4.0 I6. Now it was running really good after shoving a bunch of lucas oil injector clearner through it after it sitting for 2 years. So i just take it down to get emissions (which it passed very well) not i got this loud knock in the engine at idle.

The thing runs great when not at idle, but here is the craziest thing. It does it on and off. I think i need to replace the motor mounts because of it being unbalanced. Also I have noticed that my oil presure gauge peeks over 80 off and on, but usually sits at 25 or so.

also got an issue with my fuel gauge going up and down when turning left and right. I had just taken the tank out to replace the o-ring on the pump because it was leaking.

Another thing, I have a nice little thumping in the back were the rear shocks are. The guy i bought it from had wood screws holding the shocks in and the holes were rusted out and stipped. I retapped them and put much better screws in (grade 8) and they are tight as tight could be. I think the shocks are what are causing the thumping not really sure

Please let me know

I had the same knocking at idle which went away when driven - Found out after many exhaustive attempts at different so-called "Jeep Specialists" in London, that told me it needed a new engine. After a HEAP of help from the guys here on the board, (and thanks to EDM in Bicester UK) it was found to be the bolts for the flex-plate which were loose, coupled with a cracked flex-plate.

also got an issue with my fuel gauge going up and down when turning left and right. I had just taken the tank out to replace the o-ring on the pump because it was leaking.

The gauges is probably a bad earth, but I'm sure someone else maybe able to shed more light

As for the shocks, they're probably well past their use-by-date

I will have to take a look into the flex plate.

as for the shocks it seems like they are not the right ones. I am switching them out with my brothers one from his jeep when we put his lift on.
