Hi fellas, I need some intel on how to reset my proportioning valve so that my brakes will transfer some stop to the rear instead as the whole to the front. Brady told me a while of what to do but I have forgotten.....My bad! Anyhow, if anyone has the goods for me on how to get my brakes to work that would be great.
What I've already done.
I have an 87 MJ and have put in a new M/C and an XJ p-valve (proportioning valve) and have vacuum bled the brakes a few times. Still no stoppy... the brakes feel spongey still and seem as if only the fronts are getting the juice. My booster and M/C are good to go so that's atleast a solid. Please let me know so I can come and play on the trail.

Did you put different brakes on, or still using the stock ones?

Do you still have the wacky load sensing valve on?

rollin with the stock brakes. I know the brakes will be under powered with 36s but this is sponge session 101. Hit me up Dan

That's why the p-valve is off an XJ, so as to rid itself of the load sensing valve

The nut on the front of the p-valve, had a spring and a piston behind it. Try taking all that out. This will effectively eliminate the proportioning ability of the valve. If you get better pressure to the rear brakes, you know you're on the right track. If you get too much pressure, try stretching the spring a bit and putting it back together. I can't remember for sure if you would need a stiffer or softer spring, may take some trial and error. I have a brand new TJ p-valve you can have if you want to play with it.

So Brady, what do I do when I pull the spring and valve?

Put the plug back in and re-bleed your brakes.

I've done this twice and to no success.....I'm thoroughly lost as to what to try now.

Any crimps in the brake lines to the rear??
Did you bench bleed the m/c? Does the m/c have a similar bore and stroke to the original one? is the push rod between the booster and m/c long enough?

The front brake circuit should be the rear outlet on the m/c. It has the bigger reservoir, and is the first to see the braking action. If the rod isn't long enough, maybe it's not sending enough volume to the rear brakes?

Thanks for hanging through my online brainstorming....

Hey Dan, I appreciate the storming of any sort. M/C is solid and sound as far as I can tell. It's an exact replacement and is dead on as far as we could tell. One of the guys in a new group I'll be attending has vast amounts of knowledge in this stuff and I'll see him Thursday night. So, I'm at my witts end for my nugget of a head and spoke with another XJ guy that lives up the street and he hasn't a clue. Thankyou again guys be we can now delete this thread b/c I'll have the savvy fellow school me. Dan, one more thing, I need a coil bracket kit for my front waggy 44, how much for RE's?
