But if someone is on a "hunger strike," why do we coddle and support them?

Frankly, if Saddam wants to off himself in a slow and painful manner, no argument here. I'd not have bothered to put in a "feeding tube" - he obviously doesn't want to eat.
Same goes for Gitmo - if people there don't want to eat, don't foist it upon them. Let's test their resolve... After about a week, let's start having fun by having a pork rib BBQ or something!
No, sticking a feeding tube up their nose is caused by all the tree-hugging hippie freaks that have managed to get themselves into some position of authority. Let's start ramming feeding tubes up THEIR noses - but don't use hospital issue stuff, try using a 3/4" garden hose, instead.
Oh - no anasthesia, no lubrication. Have someone really enthusiastic on the hose, trying to get it down there...

Actually its been documented that the prisoners at GITMO gained weight during their incarceration despite what the what the popular press has to say.
And yes you are cranky.:laugh2:

What do you need to know? Or, more accurately (probably...) what was I meant to be looking up for you? Refresh my memory, it's too damn hot to think....

As far as I'm concerned I say help em along, force feed em some exlax...
Fact is, while they are jailed, they are jail property and jail responsibility.
While they are fasting, the authorities keep records of vitals and weight.
When they pass out from malnutrition, they will be fed through an IV and brought back to a semi-healthy state.
If they fast again, the cycle will continue.
If Saddam were serious, he wouldn't drink liquid either.
I've dealt with fasting inmates before and have never had one die, nor even come close to death, from starvation.
Hell Ghandi didn't even die from lack of food, but his fasts were short lived anyway.....
I like cranky.

feed him an ex-lax/mescaline solution... then pump the room full of 'apple pie' smell
I am beginning to default to cranky... and kinda like it.

I'm usually center to liberal on things, but it seems to me that in a situation like that they're using the media to make the "weaker" members of society feel sorry for them and want to stand up in defence of the inmate, no matter how deserving they are of the punishment they are recieving.
Maybe the crankiness comes from seeing criminals get the red carpet treatment while the victim gets it in the arse for a second/third/forth/etc. time, or old age, meh......one of the two anyway........

Yeah, but I prefer the "up close and personal" approach. How about a 200gr or 230gr pill, about .4515" across, and with a hollow point big enough to mix a drink in?
Or, for something really fun, turn some Delron bar stock down to .355"-ish, load it in .38Spl cases with about 1 grain of Bullseye, and use that? Should homogenise anything it gets into (we came up with that idea to defeat soft armour - all else being equal, if you double the MASS of a projectile, you double the striking energy; if you double the SPEED of a projectile, you quadruple the energy. I've thought maybe we should see about adding some sort of metal "penetrator" core to the Delrin bar - akin to the 30m/m APFSDSDU rounds for the GAU-8/A, but haven't gotten that far yet. Use straight Delrin for short-range work - say, about 30 feet or less.)

I wouldn't give that bastard the satisfaction of a quick death. He should be drawn and quartered, then have his entrails removed with a dull spoon.

Come now, my good man! You'll note I never did say in which part of the body he should be shot - merely that I'm inclined to think he should be shot...
Being shot in the navel with a nice Delrin bullet comes to mind... Or maybe load something the size of a finishing nail with a paper or Nylon DS surround, so the hole is small and would take a good long while...

we could use him as a test subject to scientifically see how many push pins you can stick in a human before they die, and if he gets too full of pins before he keels, we can dip him in rubbing alcohol, them when he stops screaming, light him on fire. then put him out, and drive toothpicks underneath his finger and toe nails, and put him in a vat of small flesh eating insects. as soon as they get enough of his skin, we douse him in insectaside then light him back on fire again.

There is, it's just a rarity in the coming generation. I blame all this emphasis on "safety" - you take all the fun out of doing things when you start strapping helmets and pads on kids, and they'll lose their ability to assess risks favourably as well.
I'm not so sure going overboard with "safety" equipment is such a good idea - not only does it cause deterioration in risk assessment, but I think we also pay for it with kids having reduced immunities (since they don't spend as much time fighting infections anymore...)

Overbearing safety protocalls by lawsuit fearing companies have actually put me in more dangerous situations offshore.
The root of this is the frivolous lawsuit. This has lead companies to remove the right of the employee to work within his comfort zone, and impose a "safer" comfort zone of their own.
You're cranky, it must be a factor of age because I am getting crankier as I get older.
If someone has the determination to starve themselves to death, let him. Just make sure there is a hot juicy steak smell wafting in there every once in a while. Force feeding prisoners on death row is beyond rediculous.

Force-feeding ANYONE who is determined to not eat is foolish. As far as "Death Row" goes, I figure we try so hard to save people there because we don't want to lose the fun of killing them ourselves...
Solution for "frivolous lawsuits?" How about we start with a "loser pays" system - and make sure the lawyers share in the defeat! Not only do they NOT get paid by their victim - er, client - if they lose something foolish like this, but they have to match the fees assessed against the client due to the loss. I don't think it's a full solution, but it's certainly a start. And, it would be something akin to what should be proposed for all these "personal injury" attorneys (is there a lower form of human life?) and "DUI Defenders" we're seeing all over. Hmm...
"Offshore" - you an oil man? Just wondering...

I have worked in the oilfield since I was 16. I started out cutting grass for a major fabricator, wound up fitting pipe before the summer was up. I worked a few years as a welders helper/fitter, then after my stint in the Chair Force I came back and was an electronics technician for 5 years. Mostly Surveillance cameras, PLC and analog monitoring systems, Fire detection systems, and Intercoms.
