lol........ that's old news :D at one time we had someone looking into bringing some into US :D but that didn't pan out for practical reasons...

It didn't pan out simply because nobody followed through. At one time I was looking into it, and XJguy was also doing so, although neither of us knew the other was doing it until later. I gave up because I couldn't find a dealer to sponsor importing them, and also because for some obscure reason the e-mail address I had for their director of international sales suddenly stopped working.

I had gotten as far as confirming that their agreement with DaimlerChrysler allows them to sell anywhere in the world. The gentleman said he thought they could sell them here, subject to meeting the requirements. The Super Cherokee uses a US-spec catalytic converter. At the time I was corresponding, they did not have an air bag steering column, so a US-spec airbag and steering column would have to be fitted. I don't know if dual airbags are required -- if so, the entire dashboard would have to be replaced.

And I didn't get to verifying if the Beijing Super Cherokee includes the currently required side impact beams in the doors.

I sure would like to own one of those stretched Super Cherokees!

Was that statement from Beijing Jeep, or Daimler Chrysler.

I was talking with my brother-in-law a few weeks ago. He used to work for Mopar, in Service Parts Distribution.

He was familiar with the Beijing Jeep deal. And according to him, part of the deal was that the vehicles would NOT be sold outside of China.

I visited southern China back in February and I saw a few XJ's on the road, mainly police and government vehicles. Quite unexpected... :)

Yep, but it's subject to DOT and EPA inspection to get it 'federalized' for on road use in the US. All gray market vehicles must go through this process to be licensed in the States.

That was from Beijing Jeep. However, it makes more sense than what your guy said.

First, Beijing Jeep is already selling them outside of China -- they sell them all over that part of the world. Why would they have a Director of International Sales if they were not allowed to sell internationally?

Second, the agreement predates DaimlerChrysler. It was originally set up with AMC, then inherited by Chrysler, which subsequently became DaimlerChrysler. Since the XJ was a fairly new vehicle at the time and was in current production, it would not have made sense for the Chinese to try to ship and sell them anywhere AMC was already doing so. Certainly not here. Therefore, I doubt very much that there was any discussion of that possibility, and I doubt very much that such an eventuality was even considered in structuring the agreement.

The man wrote to me that BJ can sell their Cherokees anywhere in the world. Who am I to doubt him? But I didn't want to buy one as a private buyer and then go through the hassle of having it modified to meet Federal regs. I wanted to set up an importer and try to get BJ to build them to US specs before sending them here, thus avoiding all the retrofit garbage on the docks in New Jersey or Oakland.

Some of it. But it uses the Jeep 2.5L and 4.0L engines, the AW-4 and AX-_ trannies, and the NVG transfer cases. Those are the heart and soul of the vehicle, and I don't know if those are license-built in China or imported from outside to be plugged into the Chinese chassis. It's the body, interior, trim and so forth that are made in Chine. AFAIK they also use US-built steering columns and boxes, but I'm not certain of that.
