are any modifications necessary to fit an ax5 from a YJ into a cherokee that had an AX? both are 2.5 liters, and i'm not sure which case is in either truck... thanks in advance.

Cool...keep in mind tho, if the T-cases are not the same, the adapter on the back of the tranny may need to be swapped in order to keep the old T-case...or swap the T-case with the tranny.

Assuming both the XJ and YJ were 4wd, I don't see any issue. You might find you need to swap the xfer case with it if the spline count or output shaft length are a problem. The output on the transfer case me be a bit different length, and disco versus non-disco front axle might affect if the donor xfer has the vacumn valve (or if you even need it).
