Besides the overall cheap feel to them, they seem like a nice car. I drove one for about a month. Power was decent if you get the V6. I would go for a manual, the auto was dumb. The tiptronic shifting was absolutely horrible. Video games do a better job.

From what Ive heard its even less of a "sports car" than the previous generation was. Underpowered for it's weight. But I have no firsthand experience.

Take that money and buy a used Honda.
That car inside a year will lose at least 30%, and if they are still running a 24V V-6 Powertrain in it...chrysler used that SAME mitsu motor in their Vans from 1990 up to a couple of years ago.
Reasearch those motors... and you won't buy one.

You could always go with a Lancer. I hear they're big with the speed crowd.

Hmmm, valid point to consider. I had a Plymouth minivan with the 6 banger in it, no problems or complaints what so ever. None the less I'll see what I cant find out.
I drove the Hondas with the six, not bad but they just didn't do anything for me. IMO the Camries I drove were better cars. The Solara wouldn't be a bad choice if the tail end wasn't so butt ugly. Tail...butt ugly? That was weak.
As far as the Eclipse goes, the six and the six speed are the only way I would go if that is what I ultimately decide upon. The engine kickes butt when it came to moving the thing. One item that is attractive, especially for the amount of annual mileage I will be putting on the car is the 10 year/100,000 mile power train warranty. Based on the figures from the Chrysler it will be replacing I should end up pretty close to the 10 year mark by the time I get to the 100 K mark.
After driving one several time this past couple of weeks, I do see myself going through front tires. It would be nice if it were rear wheel or all wheel drive. As any car goes, though, there are always trade offs to one degree or another. I suppose that is especially true when has established budget constraints that will not be exceeded.
Ricer? Maybe...just a little; I'll just have to resist the three pound "Type R" coffee can for the exhaust tip! :passgas: In my defense I'll still have the XJ and MJ. The four door wrangler fits it the budget...but...I know as well as the rest of you that I wont be able to keep my hands off of it. :D

If that's the 3.0L, the one in the wife's '99 Grand Caravan cracked one head and warped its replacement. Fortunately, she had 100,000mi extended warranty from ChryCo. Later it burnt a valve and we spent $1,500 getting both heads rebuilt. I count us fortunate that we got $1,000 for it at trade-in last November.
The new van has the 3.3L which I am told :D does not have the problems of the 3.0L.
Oh Good God! I'm talking rice-ist :puke:

At least as of December '06, the dealer says the 3.0 doesn't exist anymore - only 3.3 or 3.8. Wife's folks have the 3.8 in their Grand Caravan Sport (hah! Sport - it's a van!). They don't pile on the miles, but so far, no problems. The 3.8 does give their van a bit more kick than the wife's 3.3.
My mouth is starting to feel dirty just typing this drivel. Thank God I don't have to talk about this out loud.

It was the 3.0 being a problem...especially around 100K with valve seals...."patched" the motor in the 98 Caravan before I traded it in.
:D got $2800.00...suckers!
Hopefully Mitsu got away from that piece of crap in the eclipse...

the one in the Eclipse wasn't that bad had a ton more power than the on in the Chrysler Vans. The one in the vans was SOHC and the one in the Mitsus were DOHC

The wife's '99 was a baseline fleet model, A/C, PS, PB, AM/FM Cassette and that was about it. No cruise, no power windows or locks. After seven years and three kids I was glad to get $1,000.
Wife has bad luck picking motors. Before the van she had an '89 Pontiac Grand Am with the 16-valve DOHC 4-banger. Talk about dumba$$ design. Then she got the 3.0L. Another winner! Now it's the 3.3L. We've put 9K on it, so far, and I've still got my fingers crossed.

To bad the new eclipses are so heavy, the power would better match a 2800lb car instead of a 3500lb one.
