So in my never seem to end task of trying to figure out why my jeep will semi-stall, at first starting up, when I hit the gas and then never do it again after the CEL comes on. I had a thought of why can't I just move the fuel pump, filter and regulator to the outside of the tank on my 98. I believe I could piece the parts together from summit or someplace for a hell of alot cheaper than the full sending unit. I mean I've already replaced it once about 8 months ago and I am seem to be having issues.

Though I haven't checked the fuel rail pressure, and I am in search of a way to do that. They don't give those gauges away for a one maybe twice used tool.

I've replaced, all the normal sensors, turned up my sdjustable MAP to 5.08v thinking that might be the issue, tightened down everything, New O2's. But it doesn't seem to skip of have any issues at full throttle or anywhere else in the throttle range. Though first thing in the the morning, when I first turn down the main road, I hold the throttle at 50% to 60% open and it kinda surges threw the rpm range during acceration.

So anyways, long story short, has anybody ever set up and external fuel system on a late model XJ?

I don't thing a external fuel pump would fix your problem........A fuel pressure gauge would be cheaper then that ....and then you would know!!!!!!!!
at least with a fuel gauge you wouldn't just be guessing on a pump that you may or may not need!

Sense your in this dilemma, i think the gauge is worth the $$$$ just my .02.

Sure- use a length of hose or tube in place of the stock pump, then place an external down on the frame rail. Not sure if yours has a regulator on the fuel rail, you'll need to add one if not. As far as saving money, ebay shows 255 lph intank pump kits with sock for $80 and they're a lot quieter than external.

I went to the external pump thing on my 98 to go to a larger early model tank. In 2 years I went though at least 5 pumps. I then went to a mustang pump in the tank with the Hesco regulator outside and dumped the return fuel back with a slitlly pinched line so the fuel would spray on the pump and keep it cool.
I have had this for almost 2 years with no problems.

Thats sounds very promising, do you have any pictures and how much volume did you gain between the two tanks?

I went out and found a Fuel Pressure gauge cheaper than what NAPA wanted and threw it on.

At idle it fluctuates between 45-55 psi
Off idle if is a constant 49-50 psi

After shut down holds 49 psi for about an hour and a half, then slowly falls to 0psi. Is this an indictation of a leak?

I believe this means my fuel sending unit and pump are ok. So, now what?

For pressure that holds that long...........no thats not you problem.

You now when the problem happens so have the gauge hooked up and ran thru the hood to the windshield(under the wiper arm so you can see it from the drivers seat) and watch the fuel pressure when the jeep acts up..........if the fuel pressure doesn't drop when the problem happens, then its time to look els ware for the problem.
