I live in Oregon and my girl friend and I are seriously considering moving to Alaska this time next year. Right now we're trying to figure out what areas of the state would suit us best. We would be looking for a town with between 50,000 and 100,000 people.
My hobbies include shooting and four wheeling, so there would need to be plenty of places to do both.
My girl friend is going to be a pilot, so we would also need to be close to some aviation schools where she could complete her training and decide how she is going to pursue her career. Me on the otherhand, I have no real skills so I could most likely get a low paying job in any town we move to.
We would be moving up there with a nest egg of a little over 20k, so we would have some sliding room if employment was not immediately found. I do hear that the cost of housing is high. Any idea what a small house with a 2 car garage normally rents for?
Right now we are mainly looking for suggestions on what citys to move to. Neither of us have ever been there before. Through my internet research I have found a few pilot schools in Anchorage, so perhaps a smaller town within an hour or two away?
What time of the year would be best to take a trip to check a few things out? I would like to drive up there and spend two weeks checking out the state. Only my current situation wouldn't allow me to get away until November. Would that be a poor time of year to make the drive? Assuming we stay in the southern part of the state, how much snow would I be expecting to encounter, and how cold will it be? Are the roads plowed between major citys?
