first off i love my jeep, i've put about 7,000 dollars and hundreds of hours working on it. i'd never sell it or trade it, that being said i've been searching on craigslist latelyfor an 85 4runner, with the price of gas lately being a huge factor ($3.30) out here i want a four banger that i can build up cheap and take on road trips to find new fishing spots. it cost me almost 60 dollars to fill up my shit. i'd like to find a straight axle efi yota 4runner, does anyone else feel this way?

Yeah, it costs about 40 to fill up mine here. I was considering buying something smaller to save $, but unless I buy it dirt cheap it wouldn't be worth it. I may save on gas, but I would have to shell out 1,500 for the vehicle, plus the costs of whatever it may need, plus add it onto my insurance. So, for me it's not worth it. But with $60 a tank, if you fill up every other day, and gas is sure to go up since it's summer, I may be persuaded to get something smaller. You should be hittin the old calculator if you are really serious about buying just to see how much you would save and if it would be worth the trouble.

i dont care about the gas that much i do want a 1st gen 4 runner. Good luck getting a cheap original SFA 4runner for a decent price. Your better off getting the 22re your looking for in the least rust free unit you can find in a latter IFS year and doing an axle swap.
Yes i want one badly since i was about 7 years old when my uncle had a lifted on SFA toyota pickup sittin on about 33". I love the removeable top and the real glass rear window, retractable glass, and long wheelbase. Only vehicle like that (i got a thing for looking through foggy beat up plastic windows, bordering on OCD :bawl: )
My next truck for recreation and fun will be a 4 runner for sure.
I plan on keeping my xj for atleast another 100k miles though or untill i roll it, wreck it or its stolen.
If you care about gas youd be better off buying a small displacement civiv, sentra, or toyota echo, tercel or corolla. Get some econobox for $2,000 that gets 40 mpg. Get a hatchback and you can fit most anything in it you can fit in your xj, i love hatchbacks.
I dont think youll save much money with the 4runner. Commute with the $2,000 beater, then be guilt free getting 14 mpg on the weekends in the jeep.

I had a 85' 4-Runner that I bought used with about 100K on it.
It was under powered and did not get that great of gas milage. 85' was the first year for FI on the Toy trucks. Also the 22RE has this little high milage issue like the timing chain eating through the water pump cover and making a shake in the oil pan.
For a 2,300 lb truck it did OK but was a handful in the wind.
When it came to deciding whether to upgrade it or to invest in an XJ and build that, I looked at the axles, read about the Burfields and examined how far down the X-Member hung and how much back porch it had and went with the XJ.
The difference in fuel milage is a joke. 4-Runner was about 23 mpg hwy and no balls.
XJ was 21 mpg and gads of nads. A lifted XJ with 31's gets abut 18-19mpg hwy.
Leave the Runner on the lot and buy another XJ, you'll be better off.
X2 on the Econo Box. I've had a number of small vehicles over the years. 74' Civic-36mpg; Renault LeCar (R-5)-40mpg, Renault Wagon (R-12)-34 mpg, VW Rabbit- 31mpg... I bought every single one used and every single one paid for itself in no time just in fuel savings over a full sized. Not only that, but they were fun to drive. It's interesting in town to pull up next to a Camaro with a big block in it rev the engine a few times to get his attention, then beat him to the speed limit off the light. Of course, he's too busy laughing to pay attention to the light, but who cares!

the toy axles are far faaaaar better then anything offered in the xj here in the states, the rear axle shafts are the same diameter as a d60. one of the major advantages of a toy is the axles, get some 30 spline longfields and put some 42s on it, lets see you do that with xj axles.
the xj is definately my favorite vehicle and ive owned 4 of them so far, but the axles from the factory are crap compared to toy axles.

good point but seemed like he wanted to buy it for gas savings, not for wheeling superiority or overall stoutness etc.
I agree sweet axles from the factory. We got gyped. I heard in south america the xjs had standard hi pinion D44 fronts from the factory.:tears:

I got rid of my XJ in favor of a turbo Toy PU, 1986 flavor.
With 31s and a locker, that thing followed every XJ at FJ.
Gas mileage was/is 16.83 in town, 20mi round trip commute, and 20 or so on the interstate. You don't need to SAS the thing to make it a good wheeler.
I am selling the truck and sticking with my WJ though, as the PU has higher maintenance costs, and I don't want 3 vehicles when I move to CA.
Overall, for the premium the Toys are going for right now, I'd stick with an XJ.

I had a 91 Toy with a 22RE, 33s, 5.29s, and a rear lockright. It got the same mpg as my stroked XJ because you had to flog it to get it to move. They are not light trucks at all, mine wieghed in at around 4000lbs with very little extras so thats alot of shit for the 116hp 22RE to move. Mine had mods as well and it was still slow lol. I would also bet money my XJ could tow that truck to 60 faster than it could get there on its own

My wife and I are buying 150cc Scooters :rof: 80+mpg...50mph...1.1 gallon fuel tank... I drive 15 miles to work round trip. 5 days a week that's a tank of gas for the scooter at about say $3.00 a gal which regular is at now in Boise. That's a tank a week x4 = $12 in gas a month compared to the $45+ it costs me now and I have to fill up twice a month...
Roughly $90 in gas a month for the XJ compared to the $15 or so for the scooter... I may be the goofy 6'3" tall guy on a scooter and be laughed at... but i'll be laughing when i'm at the pump and everyone else is paying $50+ for a tank of gas that will last them a week or so and i pay $3 to last me a week... and have the extra money to play with for weekend fun or other stuff.

not to be an ass, but find a 4 cyl shoebox and drive that daily. Only take the jeep out when you're going to use it.
I bought a 200 dollar civic to be the DD.
so far I've put 200 miles on 5 gallons of gas. It's amazing when I don't have to feed the MJ $60-80 in fuel every week. It will pay for itself and it's insurance/maintenance costs in 2 months at the current price of fuel.

x2 on that. i had a '94 22re 4-by truck, the yota put up with unbelievable abuse, even with the ifs although the gas mileage was pretty crappy for a 4-banger, and a friend with an '87 4-runner 22re gets worse gas mileage than i do. i'd just get a corolla or something along those lines.

You think thats bad, out here regular costs 3.60 a gal in some spots. The price of gas is eating away at my regearing fund, kinda a catch22

plus you guys in Boysee have a pretty cool scooter dealership downtown. i was eyeing a nicely redone stella there last summer.
ditto the low cost econobox idea though. not onl does is save you money in gas everyday, but the added confidence it gives you when you wheel can make you a better driver. i never realized how much trouble i caused myelf fearing for my dd, till i didn't anymore. spots that i used to wouss through became easy when i drove a little more aggressively and confidently.
