I am about to aquire an 89 XJ from my dad. A while back his harmonic balancer came apart under load. Would it be possible for the balancer to cause damage to the timing chain as it came apart? the engine was rebuilt a few years back, He said that after the HB exploded there was a new noise in the front of the motor. Wondering if the timing chain got stretched or damaged during the explosion.

I know that if the HB came apart and flew of it could have hit the timing chain cover and dented it into the chain. Usually makes an awful sound. Mine was comming apart and before it fell off it started making contact with the cover and that is how i discovered it was going bad. Hope that helped ya

That makes sense I'll have to look at it.
