increasing steering strenght

so this weekend i ran 33's on my cherokee for the first time, and while turning was ok on the street and trail, it was impossible in the rocks. with the 31's it was hard to turn in rocks, but doable.

now i would like to install ram assist, but since i'm still running the stock setup, i don't think it would work to well. so i'm wondering what, if anything you guys might recommend to make the stock setup strong enough to turn bigger tires in the rocks until i can get ram assist.

you can:
- install a durago steering box (search for that one)
- 1 ton OTK steering (jcr offroad)
- power steering fluid cooler ( search for this one also)
- and add a steering box brace like c-rok offers

I belive you will have to modify the links for your swaybar when you go OTK. Might want to look into that too before ya start.

Yes, you do. Not to mention that you will have to clearence the coil buckets, relocate the TB, and ream the knuckles from the top side(if you use the 1 ton TRE's).

or you can make a custom steering system using heims and put the tie rod under the knuckle and drag link on top and a 3/4" or 5/8" bolt through the knuckle and heims. www.poisonspydercustoms.com they offer all the hardware needed to do this. even the tubing(1.5" DOM .250)

thanks for the ideas. those are pretty much all ideas that i've been playing with already.

i already have the tnt customs front bumper with the frame/steering braces/sleeves, and it works great.

power steering cooler is currently in the planning stages (layout and parts, not the "how to")

and i've been playing with Shomsky462's idea for a while, but i'm not sure about the idea of using heims on my daily driven trail rig. i do drive ALOT of miles.

Flush the power steering fluid out, made a big difference on mine. My fluid looked like barf and I was having the problems you mentioned. Fresh fluid and the problem is still there but not near as bad. I think another fluid clean and a PS cooler and I will be OK. My rig does have 210K on it so if its still week after that its time for a new pump.

I used to DD my junk with rod ends on the steering and TB. Not all that fun, but wasnt the end of the world. One word of advice, if you DD with rod ends, they will wear alot quicker than TRE's. For a DD, go with TRE's. Plus, they are avaliable at damn near any parts house, if you need one quick.

Here is a pic of my setup.

I vote for the Dakota setup. Thats my next major mod. I just hate haveing to line up those damned steering box bolts...what a PITA that is.

33s? Grow some forearms.........:D

The larger bore box is about all I would do. RA is a bit overkill at this point.

LOL i was wondering how long it would take somebody to say that. LOL i'm not a strong man, but i'm on the way there, and when my tires are stuck between a rock and a hard place, they just won't turn. my wife has the AGR super box and pump, and she can turn her 33's a little easier than me. on the other hand, while ram assist might be just a touch overkill, i also like how stupid easy it makes the steering. LOL
