I was at a junk yard today and found this on a 88 MJ 4 cyl 2wd, the tag had "4 11" stamped on it so i think its a 4.11... but i donno what it is.
any one care to help?
Would this be a direct bolt on for my 98 XJ?

damn. that sucks... i really need 4.11's right now. it was only gonna be 98$ for the full axel

That would have been a waste. You have a decent axle in your junk now...just gear it.

i think i have a d35 as well, it has 3.07's and i'm pushing 30"s... my gas is like 8mpg.
i thought the 97+ 5 spd's would have been better!

No if you have a 98' you will have the 29 spline 8.25 axle. Which is a good axle. If you are getting that bad of mileage with 30" tires, you have other issues.

Plugged catalitic converter?
Bad O2 sensors?
Tune up?
Fuel pump/filter?

Could be alot of things.

But your axle is a lot better than a 35.

hmmm.... yeah but a regear runs what.. a god 1500$ for it being done the right way? I think i found a shade tree guy that said 400 today... but that may be off... i may have not heard him right.

Well, a good regear in Mexico is not $1500, let's say it's about 300 for the gears, 150 for the carriers, 200 for labour, so we're at $650, plus other parts that can be bad, let's go to $750, but hardly more. Is the difference on labour that big in the US? Will some specialist charge about 1000 USD just for getting the job done?

Scrappy knows an industrial company that does it for cheap, give him a call for the details.

$1500 is steap, but that should include all parts, and a quality job, but still expensive.

hey schediedel, i'm kinda far from the border there buddy...
and ben, i just paid my dues!
I'll call scrappy tomorrow, I really wanna get myself geared to at least 4.11's because i wont be running anything bigger than 31's.
either way... my 8mpgs are no bueno.

Regear it yourself. I regeared my 8.25 to 4.56 (did the arb thing too) from info almost exclusively from this site. Did the dana 30 front too. Been in nearly a year and wheeled hard - no problems. And, I'm just a mechanic wannabee - nowhere near a pro.

I think re-gearing is almost a rite-of-passage for wheelers. :)

Actually I was so appreciative of all the great info and help I had to support the site via a membership. Lot of smart and helpful people on this site.

hmmm... so its not that hard? i can do the almost advanced stuff... so... maybe i should do it myself...
Hey Ben, you free next weekend?

Do you have ABS? If so, you have a Dana 35. If not, you could have a D35 or the 29-spline 8.25.

Well, I've read some writeups on regearing, and if you're no pro, it will take you ages, let's say 3-4 days because you're getting stuck with parts you need, and lack of experience; at least for me, this efford isn't worth what I will have to pay for labour... Maybe in some 30 years when I get retired I could try this kind of things, but now it's just too time consuming.

BTW, it's not that I'm lazy, I installed the whole suspension lift of my XJ myself (LCAs, coil springs, shocks, leaf springs with some home-made mods), but I did it because a shop wanted about 100 - 150 USD for the labour and it took me one saturday, so I thought it was worth it.

Regards

What YEAR is your Jeep anyways?

The first post in this thread says 98. Your profile says 93. And in your other thread, you say 97. Or do you have three XJs?

Good question - and to correct the mis-guess-timation by a previous poster, simply because it's a 98 doesn't mean you have the 29-spline C8.25 - you could have a D35 in there.

If it's a '98 with ABS, you have the D35. If it doesn't have ABS, then you have the 29-spline C8.25

Either way, good job on not buying the D35...

I thought the 8.25 was quite a bit easier than the dana. But, if you can do advanced mechanics then you can do a re-gear. Be patient and read all you can, I found guy named rawbrown (on this site) to be especially helpful. Search for his comments.
