Is it summer yet?? Man I cant wait for SierraFest!! 1 thing down, many more to go.
Ok, that is all.

Hi guys. Been a lurker for a while, this is my first post.
How much should I be looking to spend to have gears installed in my 1994 Cherokee with a Dana 30 front and a 8.25" in the rear?
Thanks.

it was $1336.52 out the door....
Dana 30 4.56 gears
New Dana 30 carrier
Chrysler 8.25 gears
Master install kits for both
Labor
I can do most of what I need on the jeep. If I don’t know how to do it, I'll learn. If I still cant figure it out, I'll ask for help. If my help doesn’t know how to do it, I'll pay someone who is a professional. If I’m lazy (oil change – rotate and balance tires), I’ll also pay someone to work on my crap.
When it came to gears, I wasn’t going to mess around with anything but a professional that places a warrantee on the work he did...$1300 was worth it to me and was the cheapest quote I got in Fresno. If you can find less, than right on!

For those shopping around for the cheapest price, you should keep in the mind the old addage. "You get what you pay for." Someone who charges more for gears usually knows how long it takes to get them set-up right. I just installed new 4.56 gears and air lockers in a friends TJ today. I am a professional, and have extensive experience setting up diffs and lockers. It took me 8 hours in the shop to get everything right and set-up the way it should be. It takes time, and time is money in the automotive world. So less money= less time to do the job right.
So Joe, I think you got a pretty good deal. How much was parts, and how much was labor?

The guy that did it, yes was the cheapet quote I got, but it also was for having the rear out of the vehicle (forgot to mention that) and he was the most recomended to me out of the shops in the area. The guy had my Jeep in his shop for about a week. I know the labor was $650 so that makes the parts and tax come out to $686.52.

That sounds about right for the labor. So how do you like the ratio change?

Sorry man. I have very little free time these days. And for me to give up a whole day off just to go spend it at work sucks ass. Look around, I'm sure you will find the right place to help you out locally.

Just talked to my guy in Stockton. Price went up on parts and because of the lower miles on my rig he didnt factor in the rebuild kit @ first. $1250.

For future reference, what shop(s) in the bay area have a good rep for gear swaps? Of cousre a road trip isn't out of the question either.

I havent put the rear in yet so at this point I spent a lot of money on a very big and stinky paperweight. I plan on installing it this Saturday morning, I cant wait to see what a difference it's going to be going from 3.55 to 4.56.

It takes the rig back to a sports car off the line, I loved the pick up when I first changed over. Then I went and got bigger tires.

ok, I finally got my rear axle in yesterday (PIA) and drove it to Huntington Lake today. Holy crap!!! What a difference, feels like I'm driving around with V8 HP and torqe!.....I was able to go up the 4 lane doing 65 in cruise control with no downshifting. Also, as a BIG FAT BONUS, my gas milleage is almost 50% better than with the old gears. The only thing I need to do now is get a new spedo gear, my MPH are WAY OFF.

*EDIT* Above claims where made using GPS since speedo is sooo far off.

When Rear End Specialtise installed the gears in my Dana 30 they did not put ANY shims in the pinion, NONE!!!! There was no preload at all, the pinion was loose, I guess they thought there was a crush sleve? :laugh2: They also drilled the hole for the ARB too close to the UCA mount so I had to shave the arm and bolt to make it fit. I will not even get into what went wrong with the rear, but I will NEVER GO TO Rear End Specialtise again!
Go somewere else, pay more, and save some money!
